“a once-every-1,000-years flood” in Ellicott City, Maryland

DC: Rainfall in Maryland Sunday caused severe flooding in Ellicott City, turning the town’s main street into fast-flowing rapids that submerged buildings’ ground floors.

Eddison Hermond was rescuing people from the floodwaters when he was swept away around 4 p.m. Sunday. He is the only person reported missing so far because of the flooding, Fox News reported. watch

  1. I watched that last night and I thought 50 or 60 people might die, amazing prep work !
    Have you all seen the mini Cyclone that hit the coast of Western Arabia ?
    it was like Niagra Falls coming from Cliffs 1500 Ft high in’to town. Amazing flooding everywhere but here.

  2. I hate to be callous but maybe a drainage ditch is not the best place to build a city. Twice in two years they had a Thousand Year Flood. Stayed tuned for the next one coming soon.

  3. The Whether Guessers blew this one out their ears. There are no weather records from a thousand years ago, what this statement did do is give government cover for doing absolutely nothing. Until adequate drainage is constructed, they will continue to have “thousand year” floods, every couple of years.

  4. I live 20 minutes from there. The rain yesterday was biblical. Many factors contributed. a major factor was the underground drainage system got clogged with debris in the early stages.

  5. We had a very unusual rain event back in April of 2014 here in Pensacola; something like two feet of rain in 24 hours. I sat in my garage to smoke my evening cigar and watched it come down for several hours. Most incredible thing I’ve ever seen.

    In the aftermath, several locations around town had severe flooding. I helped church members with recovery in a neighborhood that “wasn’t ever supposed to flood.” Homes had anywhere from 3 to 5 feet of water rush through, depending on the grade of their lot. One resident told me 4 homeowners in the whole subdivision had flood insurance.

    I worked the Baton Rouge/Denham Springs, Louisiana flood of 2016. Same thing I heard from people there; “we’re not on a flood plain. This was never supposed to happen. I didn’t have flood insurance.”

    As I type this, the tropical storm is coming ashore and I’m really glad it skirted to the East of here. But I think it’s going to be another active year.

  6. For those who think “Baltimore”
    when Ellicott City is mentioned;
    It ain’t. Nice place BUT It IS in
    a flood plain and floods regularly. Why people stay in that is beyond be, historic or not. I helped dig it out (1972) after Hurricane Agnes and here it goes again.
