nev jones,
Battle of Hastings, AD 1066, Harold killed by the invasion forces of his cousin William the Bastard, a Norman (Norseman – North Man) descended from Vikings, who promptly conquered the whole Island.

Well if things keep going toward civil war we may find out if movie land got it wrong the painful way.

Two of my ancestral family crossed over from Normandy with Gillaume (William) the conqueror as part of his staff and inner circle of soldiers. Both were rewarded with land holdings in England for their service after Harold was defeated. Not sure if Nev J is being cheeky or if this is the level of education in the UK and US nowadays. Domesday book has the land records.

The axe was more prevalent because it was a “must have” tool on any man’s farm/land. They were primarily village centered and going to war was an occasional occupation. EVERYONE had an axe. Successful Vikingr who survived raid after raid, would accumulate wealth and could afford to have a sword.
The long boats were pivotal to raiding parties and gave the Vikingr an advantage over their opponents. When naval technology finally caught up with the rest of civilization, the tables turned on the Vikingr and contributed to the decline of that era.
Thanks, flip! That’s one episode I’ve never seen. Big fan. 😊

yeah, then the descendants of the Vikings, the Normans ie The French, kicked ass again and conquered England. William the Conquerer is my 31st great grandfather and his known companions are also great X grandfathers. the Franks were also a Germanic tribe descended from Vikings. i am also related to the Anglo-Saxon kings. the Saxons were also a Germanic tribe. #MakeEnglandPlantagenetAgain

I’ve had a loose theory that while the Vikings as a conquering/ ruling culture were finally kicked out of Briton, a lot of their dna was left behind, they weren’t celibate conquerors. Along with that genetic base, the Viking battles, and the later battles eventually created the attitudes, and battle skills that eventually lead to the British Empire. [in a similar way I suspect a lot of Afghans are descended from Alexander the Great’s soldiers, too.]
However, most of what I know about the Vikings I learned from reading Hagar the Horrible. Well Hagar, plus a bit from reading 12 or so books from Bernard Corwwell’s The Saxon Tales (Stories/Chronicles) series of historical novels.

An oft forgotten episode of Norse lore.
