Amtrak Trains Keep Breaking Down Despite Massive Injection of Taxpayer Cash

AZ ST: Amtrak, the national passenger railroad company of the U.S., continues to have routine breakdowns despite receiving massive injections of taxpayer dollars from the Biden administration, according to data from the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Since 2021, there have been 333 Amtrak train incidents reported nationwide as of July 9, 2024, slightly less than the 397 incidents that occurred between 2016 and July 2020 during former President Trump’s tenure, according to the DOT. The Biden administration, as a part of an announced $66 billion for passenger rail in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, has dedicated huge amounts of taxpayer cash to Amtrak, including $4 billion being given to the rail company near the end of 2022, according to the White House. more

  1. “…keeps breaking down despite massive infusions of taxpayer cash” Now, for some reason, I’m thinking of a certain country whose name rhymes with “train”.

And isn’t it passing strange that everybody but us is getting high-speed trains and hypersonic missiles? Are those things somehow incompatible with DEI? Hell, even slow trains are apparently incompatible with DEI.

  2. And the cost of a ticket is ridiculous and sometimes doubled. On the auto train it can cost $ 120 for a seat PLUS $ 350 for your car ( one way) and if you want your own sleeper that will cost an additional (depending on room type) $ 200 to 1,500 and that’s the low estimate.

Plane tickets ( with no car but rental of a good one for a week is $ 350) can be had for less than $ 200 to 300 per. Plus you have to live with the tyranny of Amtrak schedules.

Europe and even South America does it better.

  3. I remember when Amtrak lost tens of millions of dollars on their hamburgers alone. OPM- Other peoples money disappears quickly.
    Here’s an idea
Tie their pay to efficiency and lack of theft.
Anybody remember the manual reciprocating driving device?
It’s known in the military as a hammer, only $500 back then.
