  5. My understanding is they play that game with lever actions and double barrel shotguns as well. I think they have competitions in Kalispell and in central Oregon. I’ve been invited to go watch, but haven’t made it yet.

    These are older than dirt, but give you som idea what can be done…

    WARNING… You’re going to want to immediately pause the video when you go to it and go to full screen and you still will have to replay it and not believe what can be done with our cowboy guns. The rifle and pistols in the videos are most likely 38 Spec. and the shotguns are twelve gauge. For the pistol you have to cock the hammer back for each and every shot that you want to fire. Try not to get caught up in watching the videos that follow the links or you’ll be there all day.

  10. Note that after moderation it got put ahead of my one above. Also if you hang around after the fourth video it gives you a bunch of his stages at one of the “End of Trail” shoots (world championships).

    Current videos out there, but I’ve not gone through them. While what I put above is dated it give some idea of what can be done…

    When they timed my stages they used an hour glass or when I was doing well an egg timer.

    Most of these peeps shoot extremely down loaded 45 long colt with wax bullets. Probably non lethal. But who wants to find out?

    Actually the mounted has NO BULLETS / NO PROJECTILES…

    The unburnt powder and/or the wad coming out of the pistol pops the balloons.
    Works great until you nick your horse’s ear which they take exception to.
    Believe she never gets ahead of herself and fired until almost broadside of the balloons.

    Not sure but looks to far away. I’ve always been under the impression they’re using some type of organic shot. At about 600 fps.

  16. Smooth bore, “wax” blanks and the chamber too short or too tight to accept a commercially loaded live round would be my guess. I say commercially loaded because you can form damn near anything. I make 243 Winchester with a rim on it for my CPA from 444 Marlin and neck 30 Carbine to 17 & 20 caliber for my Garins that started life as Remington 580 22s when I’m not making 17 Ackley Bee from 32-20 Winchester.

    33 grains by weight of Goex fg Black Powder (Hot Load).

    CMSA Certified Load: This load breaks balloons 100% at 20 yards.
    30 grains by weight of Goex fg Black Powder Goex filler to fill case.

    CMSA Certified Load: This load breaks balloons 100% at 12 to 15 yards
    35 grains by weight 60-40 mixture Goex fg (60%) and Skirmish (40%).

    Practice Load:
    22 grains by weight Goex fg with Goex filler to fill case.

    Practice Load:
    30 grains Skirmish with Goex filler to fill case.

    I think RCBS makes a blank crimping die. I’ve seen them for sale somewhere. My inclination is that the case mouth wild need to be annealed the first go round. I can’t imagine they get good case life star crimping them. A top wad and roll crimp might be better for that.

  21. There’s another possibility. Looked it up. No wad, but the (star) crimp like you see in other blank cartridges.
    Still, that could get expensive with reloading that one and not sure if it would give the expended powder to pop the balloons.

    If memory serves I believe the wax bullets are loaded with ONLY the primer which is enough to send the bullet down range. Stories for another time. Back in the day when Joe Bowman passed I helped dispose of some of his wax bullets for someone who helped with his estate. Cowboy shooters who also did the fast draw using those. He (Bowman) also drew pictures by shooting through hunks of metal with regular rounds. Did some engraving on the Rugers also…

  23. I had started the above and got interrupted by the boss. Came back to finish without looking at what was posted. So some repetition…

    As most of the regular cowboy shoots start around 9AM I always complained when timing the guys with the “mouse fart loads.” Made me hungry for second breakfast with the corn meal or other that they topped their loads off with. You could smell the burning meal.

    For those not understanding…
    Too keep the very reduced load (small amount of powder) against the primer you top the load with the meal to kept it (all the gun powder) against the primer pocket. powder without the filler would not give you the proper ignition to send the bullet down range. Best know what you’re doing or you will have problems…

    Back in the day when there were ashtrays in every office, a little teaspoon full of 50 juice was an initiation for the new guys that smoked.

    PS: Been so busy watching a collection of new midnight movies that there has been no time to watch all of these too. Just in case you missed it, there will be a review, later. It was pretty incredible. This dude who hates MAGA was arguing with this chick who hated MAGA and he now claims to be MAGA and she doesn’t know who she supports and these other 3 dudes are saying all is lost and everything sucks and it’s all Trumps fault and MORE. Much, much more.
