Another Biblical Find? Archaeologists May Have Found Peter’s Home Town – Bethsaida

CNS: Archaeologists may have found a place that Jesus—as well as Peter, Andrew, and Philip—knew very well.

In Matthew 11, Jesus expresses his frustration with the people in his native region, who, despite witnessing his mighty works, refused to repent and believe the Gospel.

One of the groups he singled out were the residents of Bethsaida, the home town of Peter, Andrew and Philip. “Woe to you, Bethsaida!” he declared. “For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.”

Other mentions of Bethsaida in the Gospels refer to those mighty works: Jesus healing a blind man in Mark 8, and in Luke 9, feeding the 5,000.

As I never get tired of saying, Christianity is an historical faith. It tells the story of God’s actions in human history, not some mythical “once upon a time.” Thus, as I also never get tired of telling you, it shouldn’t surprise anyone when archaeologists discover evidence that confirms this fact.  Read more

  1. “What’s the last name?”

the Disciple? Later changed to “the Apostle”?

    🙂

What was Jesus’? Christ is not his last name.

I’m not so sure they had last names. More like: Peter “from Bethsaida” Oh, THAT one. A lot of “Son of”s back then.

Besides, Peter wasn’t even his birth-name. If the locals knew him while he grew up there, they would not have known him as Peter and would have called him Simon instead.

That’s what Jesus re-named him – Cephas = rock. AKA Petra. He was the first follower and Jesus saw him as the first rock/cornerstone of the foundation for what He was doing.

  2. Thank goodness, it was found within Israel’s borders… where they treasure and protect the antiquities. KEEP WESTERN CIVILIZATION ALIVE !!

If some Judeo-Christian archaeological site was found in Syria, Iraq, et al. then ISIS and the various Muzzie-only fanatics would destroy it in no time.

  3. If you perform several miracles, expect a lot of jealousy from most around you because They didn’t win lifes’ lottery. Jesus should’ve realized that, but he was a bit young at the time. Youth is wasted on the young.

  4. I found the passages regarding Jesus’ time going back to his stomping grounds interesting.

He didn’t get the respect He did everywhere else. Because they “knew” the little guy that grew up there.

It names Jesus’ siblings, so you know he wasn’t Mary’s only child.

His ability to perform miracles was severely limited!

    Starting at Mark 6:3

3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”
5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

I find this fascinating. A statement on how our faith matters, IMO.
