Aug. 6, 1945: U.S. Drops Atomic Bomb On Hiroshima

OAN– Today has marked 76 years since a U.S. B29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan during World War II. On August 6, 1945, the first nuclear bomb to ever be deployed killed approximately 140,000 people instantly.

The nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, coupled with a second bomb in Nagasaki, led to Japan’s surrender. The bombings became the cornerstone to ending the war.

Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga delivered a speech to commemorate the nation’s losses as well as the victims of ongoing aftereffects of the nuclear desolation. more

  1. Nuking Japan saved at least 4 of my uncles, 2 in the Navy, 1 a Marine who had survived Iwo Jima and my dads next oldest brother a US Army paratrooper who went on to Japan to serve occupation duty after the war ended. I don’t think that if God forbid Henry Wallace had been President instead of Truman after FDR’s death that he would’ve nuked Japan since he was a pinko and commie sympathizer. And I’d bet that Harry Truman slept very well that night after hearing that we had nuked Japan and once again at Nagasaki and ending World War 2.

  3. LOL. Let’s see, in 1972 one of my crews best friends was a JAP kid. So Jr. year high school, cute little history teacher is playing, what did your daddy do during the war. Which was working out cool, until she called on Mr’ My Jap Pal. She was like oh shit. To late. His answer, my dad was a Kamikaze Pilot. Flew 28 missions. The entire class roared. Mr. Jap MoFo was best man at my wedding and we still keep in touch. Love the guy.

  8. President Harry Truman would have been Impeached if he had not ordered the use of those Atomic Bombs. The grieving relatives of the hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded American servicemen would have demanded it. That was President Truman’s opinion. The Department of Defense estimated the dead and wounded would far exceed the causalities of Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, where the Japs fought to the death and the American casualties nearly equaled the enemy dead. The Purple Hearts that have been awarded since World War II ended were made in 1945 in anticipation of those American casualties. Those Atomic Bombs saved more American lives than the combined Japanese deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki from any cause, including the effects of radiation. It also saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of Allied Prisoners of War and civilians who would have been slaughtered by their vicious captors when Japan was invaded. Look up the murder of American POWs on Palawan Island, or the murder of Australian and British POWs during the Sandakan Death Marches on British North Borneo in 1945 if you want to confirm this fact. The Japanese would have lost millions of civilians during the years it might have taken to subdue the Emperor’s servile population, if Okinawa was any indication of the cost of invading an island crowded with non-combatants. Attacking Pearl Harbor had serious consequences.

  9. Amen Marco, and if we had to invade Japan instead and lost a large part of that generation, the baby boomers would never have existed probably including my dad since he might have had to fight the Japs instead of going to Germany in the Air Force after WW 2. My grandmother hated Japs because she had 3 of her sons serving in the military during WW2 and one of my uncles married a very nice Japanese lady after the war was over.
