Australian Navy Delivers 800 Gallons of Emergency Beer to Bushfire-Hit Town

Breitbart:

The Royal Australian Navy was applauded Friday after one of its ships completed an emergency beer run to help resupply a pub besieged by bushfires.

More than a thousand people have been evacuated from the small town of Mallacoota in the state of Victoria, with the military sending landing craft to collect families trapped there since New Year’s Eve.

But after several shuttle runs and with the immediate emergency ebbing the navy delivered much-needed supplies, including a precious cargo of beer to thirsty survivors and bushfire responders, a department of defense spokesperson confirmed to AFP.

“The beer is not occupying unnecessary space on HMAS Choules and essential supplies were not offloaded to accommodate the beer,” the spokesperson added. read more

  1. Not only is the Australian Navy a bunch of seafaring drunks, a reliable source tells me that many other Navies he has come across drink on duty. Our Navy and Coast Guard have much higher standards. Small wonder we can kick everyones’ ass.

“Beer is a good extinguishing agent?”

…Well, no beer was involved in this particular story, but it DOES demonstrate how that COULD be a true statement.

…my fire company was called out to a large, wooded field behind a Super K-Mart construction project (tells you how long ago THIS was), for a smell of smoke in the area.

There was definitely a smell, but little more.

The area was impenetrable to full-sized vehicles and we didn’t have enough contiguous woods to justify a Gator, so we packed up with Indian tanks (the manufacturer’s name for them, possibly due to their backpack nature, probably illegal to call them that now), and walking into the woods we went.

…after a good deal of sweaty walking and sniffing around, we found a very small burn area making a very large smell, with a cigarette butt neatly centerd on this windless day attesting to the origin of this smoulder.

…well, it was a hot day, Indian tanks are operated vey manually by repeatedly pumping something like a bicycle frame pump, we were well out of sight of the road, it was an all-male crew, and everyone had hydrated because of the day before intitiating the search … so we put the smoulder out with the OTHER hoses we carry as standard male equipment that requires unbuttoning the well-known red suspenders to access.

    “Surround and Drown” indeed…

…it was quite effective, too, althogh in the OFIRS report, “Method Of Extinguishment” was listed as “Hand-Portable Equipment”.

…and this after drinking only WATER.

…obviously, the scale of the Oz fires was greater…but so is the capacity of beer to generate extinguishing agents.

…so maybe beer IS “Essential Equipment”, IF native Aussie equipment isn’t significantly smaller that American-made.

…although the ammonia smell probably isn’t good for the koalas, either…
