BPR: Hope that beloved British actor and experienced hiker Julian Sands may, by some miracle, still be found alive faded as authorities were forced to close tourist resorts in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel mountains where Sands went missing on Friday the 13th of January due to the risk of avalanches.
On Wednesday, the Twitter account for the Angeles National Forest announced, βAfter major snowfall near steep mountainsides, there can be avalanche danger. Currently, the Mt. Baldy Resort and nearby popular snowplay areas cannot be accessed due to a recent avalanche covering Mt. Baldy Road. Potential danger could last 24-48 more hours or so.β more
I used to work at the ski resort on Mt. Baldy. When the snow was good, it was the absolute best in SoCal. Skiing under the main lift when the snow was good would rival or exceed any of the big-name western resorts. There were many steep chutes off to sides of the main run, no wonder there is an avalanche danger.
I thought Senator Mt. Baldy was busy being depressed while the wife was out vaycaying.
Mount Baldy? Heck. She barely gives me a peck on the cheek anymore.
But seriously folks I have very fond childhood memories of sledding and chili cookouts there.
A kid from San Gabriel being whisked an hour or two to a snow laden wonderland was seriously good stuff.
13th of January!!! FFS, don’t they know we are now in March? and by the way, though I have never heard of this guy, I am sorry…. Aaand, did anyone else think that “…where Sands went missing on Friday the 13th of January due to the risk of avalanches.” was a tad confusing? Just me I guess.

Way back in the day , mules would pull a trolley from Ontario up the center of Euclid Ave. to the foothills of Mt. Baldy. When they got to the end, the mules were unhooked and put on the back of the trolley where theyβd ride down the hill to Ontario. I grew up there but that was after the trolleys were discontinued.
‘Room with a View’ featured a young Julian Sands and Helena Bonham-Carter in a lush period piece by Merchant & Ivory based on the story by EM Forster. One of my favorite movies (‘films’ to the artsy fartsy crowd) of all time.
