Backpedal in progress: Michigan Gov. Whitmer’s office clarifies support for ‘defund the police’ movement

Twitchy: Yesterday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was asked about the “defund the police” movement, and her answer was basically “pretty much”:

@jackturmanIII

Asked about the “Defund the Police” movement, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told @Russian_Starr, “It’s really about reprioritizing and rebuilding communities, not just policing. That this is really about where do we, where do we prioritize our resources.”

Starr asked if she supports defunding police departments and using the funds for education. She said, “I think you do all those other things. You don’t need all the money that’s going to the police departments. So, yeah, I mean, the spirit of it, I do support that spirit of it.”

However, Whitmer is widely seen as auditioning to be Joe Biden’s pick for a running mate, and the Democrat nominee now says he would increase police funding. MORE

  1. All the “rebuilding our communities” and other civil rights stuff has been going on for the last 70 years that I’m aware of and we never seem to make any progress with it.

    Maybe it’s time to start thinking about a new approach instead of revamping and repeating the failures we’ve already experienced.

    But what approach would that be?

  2. Witless just remembered those scary guns that the people protesting HER were carrying. She doesn’t want to be the first government victim to suffer the consequences of her unConstitutional behavior at the hands of We the People.

  3. The part about increasing education cracked me up. We wont make people any smarter with more common core education especially when it is the post education process teaching these kids the value of rioting against society.

  4. Just when I think she can not attain any greater level of stupidity, she does. I would say “nice choice, Michiganders,” but we’ve all made the very same choices in our separate states, albeit at different (sometimes the same) levels of elected government.

  5. I am extremely supportive of the police and believe they have a horribly difficult job. In most claims against them, I start from a position of giving the police the benefit of the doubt.

    While I don’t want to defund the police, I would like to curb the practice of selling surplus military equipment to local police departments. Mayberry USA does not need an armored personnel carrier. Equip departments with what they need to perform their job safely, but going the para-military route is too much.
