At the time, a college degree meant something because it turned you into a functioning citizen and adult and it could be had at a tiny fraction of what it costs now. Also, the idea of a blue collar worker feeling ashamed because he never went to college is pure horseshit. They were heroes who churned out the hundreds of thousands of jeeps and trucks and tanks and planes and ships that allowed us to save the world
The loan problem now is the result of a horrendous fraud perpetrated by a diseased institution called Higher Education, which bankrupts kids for life while turning them into useless humans whose thinking borders on schizophrenic. The real solution to this awful problem is to seize the Foundations of every college in the land and use it to compensate all the millions of kid who were damaged by these monsters
