Big Island tourists follow GPS right into water at Honokohau Harbor

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (KITV4) — The Big Island’s Honokohau Harbor is quickly gaining national attention, and even international notoriety, after a viral video showed a pair of tourists unwittingly driving down a boat ramp, and directly into the water.

The owner of a Kona tour company told KITV4 she’d heard of tourists falling into the water before, but never seen a vehicle drive straight into Honokohau Harbor.

The duo followed GPS straight onto a boat ramp to everybody’s surprise on a Saturday afternoon, and just kept going.

“Pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Christie Hutchinson said in real time, as she recorded from her phone, the Dodge Caravan floating off the boat ramp and into the water.

“I was so stunned because I was actually in the Jeep getting ready to pull the boat out of the ramp, and I see a car coming the other direction. That was the absolute last thing you would expect to see when you’re on a boat ramp.” Tony Perman told KITV4. more

  1. I have to use a GPS on my delivery routes.
I often find when I put an address I’m not familiar with that when I arrive I usually ask WTH as if I had known where it was I knew a better and usually much shorter way there. I ignore its instructions when I know where I’m going.

  2. I can’t believe for a second that someone would follow their GPS right down a boat ramp into the water. Nope, not buying it. Something else is involved.

  3. There was a show we used to watch in Canada called Border Security. Several times they showed people in Buffalo who looked up the nearest Walmart on their GPS. The GPS didn’t mention that it was across an international border and people did not pay attention when they passed the signs saying they were about to enter Canada.

Mrs. RMM and I often joke that our GPS will say “You don‘t listen to me anymore” when we don’t follow the directions it gives.

  4. I’ve been there, but not that exact spot. Lot’s of cool Kona coffee plantations in the area. Many provide samples.
Too much caffeine – I couldn’t sleep at all that night.

  5. My sister thinks GPS is the greatest thing around. I always tell her that if I don’t know where I’m going I don’t need to go there. Then my horror stories follow about people losing their life due to GPS. I sent her the video as a reminder. 🙂
