Bill Nye’s Scientism

There is a saying in the world of science that if scientific facts do not support your arguments then stop shouting. It is thus a waste of time to appeal to “scientism” or to rely on popular spokespersons like Al Gore or Bill Nye to make it look otherwise.

WUWT: It will do more harm to your own self-esteem than the pretension of winning an argument by appealing to authority or popularity. Increasingly, we are seeing more and more outrageous and aggressive anti-scientific claims that anyone who is not willing to embrace the dangerous global warming bandwagon and to condemn its culprit, CO2, is actually the equivalent of a Holocaust Denier.

This sort of name-calling, loud self-promotion and fact twisting actions, closer to political rodeo than to healthy scientific debates, are simply telling us that our opponents have already lost their fallacious arguments and are getting short on any real scientific facts.

Professor Albert Einstein had it perfectly right. When he was told about the publication of the pamphlet “100 authors against Einstein” in 1931, he replied: “Why 100? If I were wrong, one would be enough.”  MORE

10 Comments on Bill Nye’s Scientism

  1. I could accept that Nye is a smart person, regardless of any degrees he has or doesn’t have, except that his statements show otherwise.

I had a friend make a pro-GW argument of, literally, ‘because science’. Another friend, a true environmentalist with a Phd in the environmental science area, kindly asked for more information, at which point she deleted the conversation.

  2. True story:
I took 6 Flexitallic gaskets out to the jobsite where 2 BSMEs were working and said: “We have to install these.”
They both took them, turned them over and over in their hands, and after about a minute or so asked what they were, and how they were used.

    No shit. No exaggeration.

  3. BIG money in Globaloney Warming.
BIG TIME control over millions of peoples’ lives.

The totalitarian/socialists aren’t gonna give it up without a fight.

Whatever Nye is, regardless of his “education,” he’s a shill for totalitarianism/socialism and is reminiscent of Trofim Lysenko. Without the backing of the totalitarians he would be laughed off the world stage, to resume his career as an ass-clown.

  4. Its not ‘settled’ because that is not the nature of science.
Every single theory suffers continual assault from better experimentation capability, more accurate measurements, larger computers, and a sea of undergrads prying up every stone in the road.
    This is good.
That is how it is supposed to work.
A theory is only a signpost along the road to understanding, not a destination
Nye is a shill, doing what he’s paid to do.
His fame will suffer the same fate as that of the Bay City Rollers, because those who take him seriously are no longer Ten years old.

  5. A quote from a real genius says it all:

“It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong.” — Richard P. Feynman.

  6. But, it’s easy. Too easy.

Read any article that is any way related to a weather event. It’s casually mentioned in all articles, “..we’re seeing this due to climate change.”

    No. We are not.

It’s easy to jump to conclusions.

Every ‘scientist’ has stopped looking for answers. There is only one 2-word answer: “climate change.” To find fallacy in the written word would require actual work for pay.
