Bloodied Ukrainian Troops Risk Losing Hard-Won Land in Kursk to Russia

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Five months after their shock offensive into Russia, Ukrainian troops are bloodied and demoralized by the rising risk of defeat in Kursk, a region some want to hold at all costs while others question the value of having gone in at all.

Battles are so intense that some Ukrainian commanders can’t evacuate the dead. Communication lags and poorly timed tactics have cost lives, and troops have little way to counterattack, seven front-line soldiers and commanders told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity so they could discuss sensitive operations.

Since being caught unaware by the lightning Ukrainian incursion, Russia has amassed more than 50,000 troops in the region, including some from its ally North Korea. Precise numbers are hard to obtain, but Moscow’s counterattack has killed and wounded thousands and the overstretched Ukrainians have lost more then 40% of the 984 square kilometers (380 square miles) of Kursk they seized in August. more

  1. Shocking, only because Zelenski is so stupid, so selfish , so evil, that he sent the Ukrainian soldiers to their certain imminent death JUST to buy time for Shitpants to play out this charade. Just so Zelensky could defer his eventual exile, and perhaps execution, for such STUPID war games, such stupid toying with the lives of young soldiers just so they can throw their weight around, and to amass loot that they won’t live to spend in another year or so.

To HELL with such misanthropes! And Happy New Year to the rest of us. May God have mercy on his Creation, which never ceases to embarrass itself. Amen.

  2. “…on condition of anonymity so they could discuss sensitive operations…”

…on condition of anonymity so they could avoid the firing squad for telling the truth, which is that the whole Kursk ploy has been a misbegotten misadventure from the start, and the “sensitive operations” are nothing but war crimes, which Russia is adding up as it takes back Russian territory.

One day, when the Ukrainian perps are living their best lives in exile, each of their bills will come due. And nobody will shed a tear.

  3. That’s a good analogy, TB. In both battles, there was a case to be made for going there; but once the the original plan went belly up, both Germans and Ukies needed to withdraw

In WW2, Germans became hugely overextended. I think they needed to withdraw all the back to a defensible barrier, namely the Dnieper. My take on Stalingrad is, by the end of October, it was bait

Ukraine has a bad habit of hanging on to a place for too long. They were fighting Russia to a draw for months, then Russia surrounded on three sides and it became a slaughter
