California: DMV Vehicle Records Possibly Breached, Exposing Millions of Drivers’ Personal Data

California Globe:

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced Thursday that personal information of California drivers may have been leaked through a computer breach.

According to the DMV, the Seattle-based Automatic Funds Transfer Services (AFTS), a department contractor that verifies vehicle registration addresses, had a ransomware attack initiated against them earlier this month. This included 20 months-worth of DMV data including vehicle owner names, addresses, license plate numbers, and vehicle identification numbers (VIN). Due to the parameters of the verification process, data not given to AFTS and thus was safe from the attack included more sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, birthdates, and other data.

All together, just under 40 million DMV vehicle records may have been hacked.

“We are looking at additional measures to implement to bolster security to protect information held by the DMV and companies that we contract with,” noted the DMV on Wednesday. “Approximately 38 million records have potentially been compromised.” read more

  1. So, now the robo calls about extending the warranty on your 17 year old truck might not be legit. Totally different than the robo calls you get after the DMV sells your personal data.

  2. What kind of personal info could Cali DMV possibly have on me? Sheeet, I have one of those Cali issued DL’s that aren’t worth shit. I prefer it that way and will not renew. I used my Hatched Certificate to secure a AZ and UT concealed carry permit. I don’t need to put up with Cali’s inept shit. And if you want to see heart attacks waiting to happen, visit a Cali DMV. Full of fat fucks that need help wiping their own asses.

  3. This is nothing.
Newt Gingrich’s latest podcasts reveal that over $30 Billion of false COVID-19 unemployment claims were paid by California to prisoners and foreigners due to their Department of Labor’s failure to do even rudimentary validation checks.
