California Man Claims L.A. City Towed His Car While He Was Hospitalized and Sold It

KFI:

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A man filed a claim for damages today against the city of Los Angeles, alleging the city towed his vehicle while he was recovering from cancer surgery, then denied his appeal and sold the vehicle.

According to the Public Counsel legal organization, Joseph Morrissey regularly parked his car on city streets near his home for more than six years, and he did the same in February when he went into a hospital for cancer surgery.

When he returned home after more than a week, he found a citation for failing to move his car within 72 hours. Three days later, while Morrissey was recovering at home and medically prohibited from driving, the city towed his car, according to Public Counsel.

According to his lawyers, Morrissey contested the ticket and tow, paid the $68 fine and submitted evidence of his hospitalization, but he was ultimately denied the ability to challenge the fees. The car was later sold at lien sale, according to Public Counsel. read more

  1. Did I miss something here where the type of auto was mentioned? If it was a high end brand then the quick sale would have gone to a greedy insider. If it was a piece of shat car then it was still HIS piece of car. Either way, it comes down to what has become of Kalieffingfornia (my home state we left 10 yrs ago). This guy is in a pisser of a circumstances. I feel for him.

  2. Overcrowded cities like LA come with equally overcrowded bureaucracies that are constantly issuing new rules and ordinances to keep control of the public.
Residents are needled by the deluge of changing rules they always seem to be in violation of. That’s life in the rat race and why people snap.
This guy got caught in the gears and will be ground down with trying to get his possession back. He should just get a U-Haul and get out.

  3. The dude should have put something smelly in it that was activated when you opened the passenger door — that someone other than him would invariably do. Sure, go ahead and impound and sell my car. But don’t come back to me when the new owner complains.
