California Sets New December Snowfall Record

California Globe: The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab announced Monday a “NEW DECEMBER RECORD of  193.7 inches, which is more than 16 feet, and a prediction of breaking the 200 inch mark today.

“With a 24 hour official #snow total of 38.9″ at the lab, we have smashed the previous record of 179″ of snow in December set in 1970! Snow rates are still heavy and we could even break the 200″ mark today!

Located in a house at Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada, the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Laboratory “is a research field station of UC Berkeley specializing in snow physics, snow hydrology, meteorology, climatology, and instrument design,” according to their website. “Built in 1946 by the (then) U.S. Weather Bureau and Army Corps of Engineers, it is now managed by UC Berkeley.” MORE

  1. Not complaining at all about the weather. Lakes and streams are filling up fast. Last time we got so much rain was in 2017 when the Oroville Dam Spillway blew apart. They repaired it in warp speed. That makes me nervous – they cut corners when they built the spillway, there’s already patch work that’s been done on the spillway AND THEY HAVEN’T USED IT! How does that happen? Makes me nervous. I see a lot of incompetence among government projects and employees.

  3. If they don’t want it, the Colorado mountains and ski areas would gladly accept it this year. I hate to say it, but in the Denver area, we really haven’t any measurable snow since last April. This might be the first time in 60+ years that I can remember not getting snow before New Years. Though we still have a chance, they are predicting a couple of inches Thursday.

  4. “This SHOULD end California’s drought, but we can expect their “experts” to fuck it up somehow.”

They are already releasing water from Folsom and Shasta. It’s been raining straight for a couple weeks now. More in the forecast. The ground is just now not sucking it up and water is starting to run. Way to early on the release.

  5. Several decades ago, we had record snow and rainfall late in the Autumn during a drought year. In spite of the extremely high stream flows, the Corps of Engineers would not restrict the outflow of the reservoirs, because their rules prohibited it prior to January 1. So yes, the government will indeed screw up this end to the drought.
