California’s Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags Backfires

Slay: California’s ban on single-use plastic shopping bags has backfired as data shows the move has increased plastic waste, rather than reduced it.

The state banned the disposable plastic shopping bags in 2014.

However, the ban didn’t include thicker, reusable plastic bags, which are still allowed.

The problem is that consumers are still using the thicker bags in the same way as the banned ones and are throwing them in the trash after just one use. more

  1. NPR did a study on banning single use plastic bags. Most people used them to line their small garbage cans and threw them in the trash when full. The first thing to happen after banning single use bags, the sale of small and medium trash bags skyrocketed. End result: no reduction of plastic in landfills, only useless virtue signaling.

  2. I can’t imagine giving a fuck about plastic bags. They did that shit in DC paying a dime per bag, and people still got bags and threw them in the gutters.

I knew a bozo at ABC who collected bread ties. You know, little plastic strips with crappy metal down the center. He had bags upon bags of them.

That had me think of Grandma who had 14 pounds of butter in the freezer. And some of it was 20 years old.

I know depression era people collect butter and WWII era cans of creamed corn. But fucks sake! BAGS of bread ties?

In John’s defense he also collected chinese finger traps for pulling cables… but we never did figure out the hundreds of thousands of bread ties.

  3. Guilty. Yes, they cost $.10 each at checkout, but what else were you going to use them for except trash bags at home? And, no, I didn’t see anyone reusing them at the grocery store. Besides, the flimsy plastic bags were good for picking up after your pet in lieu of those bags, also plastic, you got for free in parks or on trails.

But I always figured that was California politicians – a huge homeless problem, a massive housing problem, a large drug problem, traffic jams in SoCal, mental health patients walking around, crime on the rise, budget issues and the politicians were worried about plastic bags.

  4. Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. — C. S. Lewis

It isn’t about anything other than conditioning people to accept this shit, then incrementally increase it to the point at which the worst elements of society are in control of every aspect of their life. Unless and until people understand this and stop compromising (going along to get along) and calling out progressive/Marxist/Satanist anssholes and telling them how the cow ate the cabbage it’s going to continue. .

  5. “Single Use” my ass! Like others have said above these plastic bags are re-purposed for other things by nearly everyone! Aaaaaaaaaaaannnnd further more, allow me to point out the absolute flaming hypocrisy of their silly argument by noting the amount of far heavier plastic items that gets put into those bags at the grocery store the first time around. Plastic milk containers, plastic tubs of butter, cottage cheese, plastic containers of mustard and ketchup, plastic wrapped products and so on and so on. The amount of this kind of plastic monumentally DWARFS the amount of plastic in the bag used to carry all that plastic and most of it only gets used once!!
So yes it does force people to buy trash bags as a result. YUGE SCAM… just like everything else the Left pushes on us so they can feel superior!

JD – telling us how the cow ate the cabbage is going to continue… and I’m pretty sure that in the same breath they would actually tell us that the cow farts salad too!!

  6. Remember that the plastic grocery bags were introduced because we were “destroying the forests!” with all the paper bags.
Where I live in the Peoples Republic of Libtardia many stores have reverted back to the paper bags because of the plastic bag ban.

  7. Is there a list or should I say a book of all the things are betters have told us to do for the planet and mankind?
I’d like to be the first in line to violate all their dictates.
