California’s Dixie Fire: Flames Jump Over Highway 89

PLUMAS COUNTY (CBS SF) — New activity on the northern side of the Dixie Fire in Plumas County Tuesday afternoon brought more mandatory evacuation orders to the east shore of Lake Almanor, the northeast side of Indian Valley and the town of Chester, according to authorities.

The fire has grown overnight to 254,466 acres and was 35% contained. There were 5,168 firefighters battling the blaze as of Tuesday morning.

At around 3:45 p.m. the Plumas County Sheriff issued a mandatory evacuation order for all residents on the northeast side of Indian Valley. The order covers an area including Dyer Mountain, southeast to Keddie Ridge, southeast to Diamond Mountain Road, west to Stampfli Lane, north to Wolf Creek, northwest to the intersection of N Valley Road and Pecks Valley Road, north to the intersection of Williams Valley Road and Lower Williams Valley Road, northwest to SR89 at Second Water Tower Creek north to Dyer Mountain.

While residents were earlier advised to evacuate to Chester where a shelter was set up at the Chester Memorial Hall, within a few hours that shelter was being demobilizing due to capacity and other logistical reasons, including the fact that Chester itself was under an evacuation warning. read more

  1. Just to put this in perspective. Driving time from Quincy, at the southern end, to. Chester, far short of the northern end is 2 hours and forty minutes. Spent a lot of time in this area as a kid. Gods country. This sucks.

  2. Th Bear Complex fire started on June 16, 2021. The Dixie fire stared on 07/14/21–1 month and 1 year apart. It’s hot and dry, that whole area from Sacto north and east is one big tender box. Wells are going dry, lakes are drying up (Lake Oroville is about ready to shut down its generating plant) due to lack of water. They’ve got to keep the Feather River alive, the lake is looking very sad. I’m thankful that the wind is blowing from the south and southwest pushing the smoke and flames to the north. That’s why Lake Almanor/Chester area is getting the brunt of the fires this time around. If those two towns go up, we’re about finished here. Those communities will take years and years to come back. Paradise was in the cross hairs on the Dixie fire as well. Now the real bad news, 8/2021 – 10/2021 will be critical fire watch. Fires can get going via lightening which is what caused the Dixie fire. Winds change from south to north. If the fire is still going, hopefully it will blow back into the areas already burned. I hope that’s the case.
