There are two factors pricing most people out of the housing market. Regulations and taxes.
Not to sound snooty or high-brow, but 100K is insufficient to live on if you live in any major city in California, and certainly not enough to buy a house;

Of course, it is unsustainable. Buying a house, at one point, was the essence of the American dream. Now, it is reserved only for the ultra-wealthy.
