Luciano Pavarotti – “Che Gelida Manina” – RARE TV BROADCAST
(Paris, 3/3/1965)
Che gelida manina
Che gelida manina
Se la lasci riscaldar.
Cercar che giova?
Al buio non si trova.
Ma per fortuna
è una notte di luna,
e qui la luna
l’abbiamo vicina.
Aspetti, signorina,
le dirò con due parole
chi son, e che faccio,
come vivo. Vuole?
Chi son?
Sono un poeta.
Che cosa faccio? Scrivo.
E come vivo? Vivo!
In povertà mia lieta
scialo da gran signore
rime ed inni d’amore.
Per sogni e per chimere|
e per castelli in aria,
l’anima ho milionaria.
Talor dal mio forziere
ruban tutti i gioelli
due ladri, gli occhi belli.
V’entrar con voi pur ora,
ed i miei sogni usati
e i bei sogni miei,
tosto si dileguar!
Ma il furto non m’accora,
poichè, v’ha preso stanza
la dolce speranza!
Or che mi conoscete,
parlate voi, deh! Parlate.
Chi siete? Vi piaccia dir!

1982 ish?….Pavarotti on the record player, spaghetti Bolognese getting ready (first thing I cooked pretty good), clean shirt and hands and creased pants, candles…..$12 a bottle chianti, the good stuff. You could burn candles in the bottle and give it to your grandkids type of good stuff. Nicholena Salvatore in a black cocktail dress with spaghetti straps…..life was really good for a minute or two…..
BEAUTIFUL. Thank you SC and MJA.
I like him without the beard.
Ah, thank you. I’m a fan, I saw him in Seattle in 1985. One of my most favourite memories. It always seemed to me that Pavarotti’s voice came through him rather than from him. Like some sort of divine intervention. So blessed to have seen him live.
@ MJA: Thank you, Dear Lady, for providing the lyrics and translation
If it’s a love song about Che Guevara, I’ll pass.
Duet of Panis Angelicus by Pavarotti and Sting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mbi1gxQDBK0
The same by Pavarotti, with Pavarotti the Elder, at Mass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt1WeSN0sm0
Translation for non-Catholics: Panis Angelicus is ‘bread of the angels.’
And, a bit of trivia: Sting was an altar boy.
