Chicago’s deadliest neighborhoods get greenest cops

CST: Faced with a surge in killings and a breakdown of trust in law enforcement, the Chicago Police Department is sending its least experienced cops to neighborhoods that see the most violence.

The six police districts with the highest total of murders and shootings this year have the most rookie officers, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis of police deployment data found.

Those districts — all of them on the South Side or the West Side — also have some of the least experienced supervisors, on average.

At the same time, officers assigned to four lowest-crime districts in the city — downtown, on the North Side or the Northwest Side — have, on average, the most years with the police department.

And the gaps in experience have grown wider since Mayor Rahm Emanuel took office in 2011.

  1. When an inexperienced cop has an altercation with a dindu nuffin and the media tramps out the family as all loving with riots in the streets and the police are strong armed to do something, it’s less costly in the end.

  2. What a great idea. Yes, those two worthless pieces of shit should have to move their homes, offices, and businesses into the Congo and be forced to clean that area up. Put a Berlin wall around the place first. A moat fulla gators wouldn’t hurt either.

  3. Everything is WRONG with Rahm. He prefers illegal aliens to law abiding citizens, his police schedule is bass ackwards. Chicago has become the murder capital of the country.
When will this low grade moron be thrown out of office?

  4. “…“Do you want a guy who’s 50 years old and 30 pounds overweight, or the young guy who’s built like a brick house?” Sposato says. “If a 25-year-old kid goes to the [slowest districts] right out of the academy, he’s not going to learn as much.”…”

I’d suggest that those young brick houses file a grievance with their union boss over these disparate assignments, but it’s a safe bet that the boss is in that safe district, so….there aint much sympathy there.

Those young bucks didn’t realize that the “dues” they would be paying weren’t union dues.

  5. O’Hare is one of the hardest airports to fly into. Pilots with seniority do not want to fly through there, so those flights are given to less experienced pilots.

I imagine that is the same thing here. The senior police offices want nothing to do with the rough areas. They are in danger but they know their careers are toast if they do anything to protect themselves from the danger. Instead they go to the quieter parts of town if they have a choice.

  6. Of course! Union rules. Guys with most seniority get to choose first where they get assigned and they know from experience which neighborhoods to avoid. This should be obvious. Sadly, if there were an app that would tell us all to avoid those neighborhoods based on police seniority, it would be deleted as “racist”.

  7. Right out of the academy I got thrown into the worst beat in the city. That’s what they do but you were paired with an experienced officer. This could be indicative of a morale problem. The officers with some time on the job no long GAF and the administration doesn’t want the rookies to be “infected” with the bad attitudes of experienced officers. This happened in my Dept. and cops with a year or less on the job were made FTO’s (Field Training Officers). It was a freaking disaster, especially when these guys started to get promoted. This is not a good sign in ChiTown.
