China slaps up to 200% tariffs on Australian wine

China will impose taxes on Australian wine of up to 212%, starting on Saturday.

Its commerce ministry said these were temporary anti-dumping measures to stop subsidised imports of Australian wine.

The duties will range from 107% to 212%, intensifying trade tensions between the two countries.

In recent months, Beijing has targeted Australian imports including coal, sugar, barley and lobsters amid political tensions. read more

  1. I’ve tasted it. They are right!

    My unbiased opinion:
    French #1
    Italy #2
    USA #3
    Spain Distant #4
South America, Other Europe, “new world wines”, Australia, Canada, all #5 as most are overly harsh and taste slightly unfinished to me.
Hebrew Sacramental Wine – Horrific #6

My cultural Background: Canadian Of Italian heritage with a Jewish wife & Extended family.

The truth is the truth and I openly admit that the French win this one hands down. Italian wines are generally easier to drink than most Californians that I have had.

Rest assured America, your wines are very very good and you have incredible bourbon styles that are unique to the USA. Your craft beers and vodkas ensure that you have the most diverse portfolio of spirits to get shitfaced on.

And now i shall proceed with said objective.

    Cheers!

  2. California itself has at least 6 or 7 grape wine growing areas, with a total of probably 1,000 or more wineries. I don’t know how most of them stay in business. It must be a struggle.

The wineries own thousands of acres. The failing ones could convert them to grazing lands for cattle, turn to the manufacture of hot dogs and sausages, and change their names to Wieneries. Instead of the George Phelps Winery, it would be the George Phelps Wienery. Only one letter needs to be added to their signs and labels. Win-win.
