Colleges Struggle Financially After Refusing to Uphold Free Speech Principles

Breitbart:

Institutions of higher learning including the University of Missouri and Evergreen State College have faced significant financial repercussions following their decision to tolerate radical calls to curb free speech rights.

A report published by Fox News on September 1 argues that prospective students and parents are growing wary of universities that are bowing to the demands of leftist faculty and students who want to de-platform speakers and label certain ideas as “off-limits.”

Both the University of Missouri and Evergreen State College have faced serious financial repercussions in response to decisions that were made over left-wing protests. These repercussions in include effects on institutional reputation, which affects all students as they go out into the world and seek employment.

The University of Missouri has closed five dormitory buildings following a series of protests that took place in 2015. The university’s residential life director, Frankie Minor, announced in April that three additional dorm buildings would be “taken offline” for Fall 2017 academic year due to a decrease in first-year enrollment. This was announced in an email that informed student employees who work in residential life that they may be transferred to another job on campus due to the lack of enrollment. Most assumed that the drop in enrollment was in response to a serious of protests that took place on the campus in 2015. Most memorably, then-Professor Melissa Click called for some “muscle” to remove a student journalist was documenting the protests with his camera.  more here

  1. Another article on Evergreen College stated that the 2017 enrollment was 216 freshmen short of 2016, with 210 fewer out-of-state freshmen. Out-of-state students pay higher tuition than instaters.

  2. higher learning vs learning higher

Unfortunately, education has become so ‘snowflaked’ that mere inquiry to gain understanding has become viewed as negative or contradictory. Rational examination of dissent would lead to understanding and the evolution of critical thinking. But that has been chased away. Modern academia can’t tolerate questioning.

  3. Everyone you know should send a snail-mail letter to the school telling them that not only are you forbidding your child from attending, but you will also refrain from making any financial contributions to the school in the future.

Why would anyone want a degree from a school that has the seal of approval from radical leftists?

  4. For all the leftist talk about how all conservatives care about is money, it’s funny how anyone can look to universities’ bottom line for an indication of when they’ll actually start to give a rat’s.

Worse is they are so stupid they actually try several steps’ worth of talkback (admitting as little ownership for their situation as possible), losing even MORE along the way.

  5. The teachers enjoy being authoritarian when school is in session. Unfortunately, there are times when school is not in session. The adults take over and the Thumb suckers have to go home.

Parents decide where you kids go to school, not the students.

  6. Rich- I think it is more a training ground for those who are dictated. The dictators are already determined, and they’re just waiting for others to set the stage for them. Probably some will come from haavaard- they seem to be the ones who run a lot of the show lately.
