Connecticut police department scraps ‘pandemic drone’ program after outcry

WaExaminer: A police department’s plan to use “pandemic drones” crashed and burned before it could even take off.

The Westport Police Department, located in Connecticut’s hardest-hit county of Fairfield, has abandoned its idea to use high-tech drones that can detect symptoms of coronavirus infection from up to 190 feet away. The backtracking came after people expressed privacy concerns about the program.

On Thursday, Police Chief Foti Koskinas and First Selectman Jim Marpe said the drone surveillance plan would not come to fruition because it was “not well-received,” according to Westport News.

“In our good faith effort to get ahead of the virus and potential need to manage and safely monitor crowds and social distancing in this environment, our announcement was perhaps misinterpreted, not well-received, and posed many additional questions,” Marpe said in a statement. read more

  2. ““This technology not only enhances the safety of our officers and the public, but the concept of using drones remains a go-to technology for reaching the most remote areas with little to no manpower needed,” ”

Reaching these “remote” areas is one thing, but returning from them is another.

  3. So drones will help in areas where there is little manpower? How is that going to help? Will the police be able to say, “Look, Chester. That guy is ready to beat that old man’s head in with a baseball bat. We might want to start rolling someone out there to put up the yellow tape?”

That does nothing to protect anyone. It just makes it easier for the police to put the pieces together afterwards.

  5. All those drones are going to do is to dramatically increase the engineering skills of John Q Public as he tries out new ways to bring those drones to earth where they can be stomped on

  6. “Can we implement Orwell’s 1984 police-state NOW? Oh, still not ready, Ok….next time man, next time!”

Never trust the police, they would prefer the streets and roads to be completely empty of people, which would mean a 0% crime rate and an easy job. They could all be at home, or stuffed into prisons, they wouldn’t care either way.

The government cares about the government.
