BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The publishing company of Hungary’s largest left-wing political newspaper says it has suspended its publication because of “considerable” losses while it searches for the “best business model” for the paper.
Mediaworks said Saturday that subscribers would be offered alternative publications or refunds. The company did not say when the newspaper might reappear but wants to “preserve Népszabadság for the future.”
Journalists at the newspaper said they weren’t given advance notice and described the suspension of the paper’s print and online editions as a “coup.”
Hungary’s media landscape has changed considerably in the last few years, with many print and online publications as well as radio and television stations coming under the control of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s inner circle, and then taking on a noticeable pro-government bent.
Searching for the “best business model” is a mealymouthed way of saying they are looking for a new bunch of victims to steal or con money from.
The reason the paper is failing is that the Hungarian culture is extraordinarily conservative. Publishing a left-wing newspaper in Hungary is like giving a hip-hop concert at a nursing home.
I know because I am of that culture.
Oh, they were talking about financial losses? Too bad.
I was hoping they were having their staff slowly vanish, never to be seen again, leaving behind a few bloodstains at most.
Could still happen,I suppose.
Lefties think everything should be free.
Wait! You mean free markets work? Wait, you mean there are still some free markets left in the world? In Europe? I wonder how hard Hungarian is to learn,I already speak Italian and French. I wonder if they would be willing to enact a second amendment? Might be worth considering a move.
Michael, FYI, Hungarian is considered the second-hardest language to learn, after English.
From Yonkers, already knew it that from having had travelled through Europe years ago visiting family. Had a wonderful time not much trouble language wise anywhere but, trying to read and pronounce road signs in the Baltic countries and of all places Wales, they, like Iceland, use three consonants to make a vowel. Should be a friggin law about that! I swear they do it to screw with the rest of us (sarcasm).
