Couple’s Car Seized By Feds For Not Meeting EPA Standards

Lonely Conservative

Illegal immigrants can just walk across the US border infected with lice, scabies, TB, chickenpox and who knows what else, and we’re told the government can’t do anything to stop them. But if an American buys an imported car the EPA doesn’t like and the feds are all over it. A North Carolina couple found that out the hard way when the Department of Homeland Security seized their Land Rover.

When Jennifer Brinkley saw a line of law enforcement vehicles coming up her driveway last Tuesday she didn’t know what to think. “I haven’t done anything wrong.”

The Homeland Security agents were not there to take her away, they were looking for illegally imported Land Rover Defenders. Brinkley had bought one via the internet last year and had invested more than $60,000 into the rare vehicle.

She thought she had checked it all out and she legally owned it. “They popped up the hood and looked at the Vehicle Identification Number and compared it with a piece of paper and then took the car with them,” she said.

  1. This is an overblown story.

It seems from what’s been made public they bought a car that was illegally imported, probably with a fake VIN number. It should be noted this particular car is much cheaper in the UK and a “cottage” industry of fraudulent imports can be very profitable for the importer if they find people who are more interested in a “status symbol” than making sure the car is legit. For a knowledgeable buyer, it’s quite easy.

And some have made big deal out of Homeland Security seizing the car. US Customs is part of Homeland Security.

This wasn’t about a car violating EPA regulations, it was about a car improperly imported.

  2. Thanks @Steve – I’ll look into it before making any judgement call ! I was just thinking they would have to seize any car built before the late 90’s

  3. These cars used to be called grey market vehicles. They could be bought but not transferred to another person. Weird but true. However I think one car with two dudes or dudettes would be all needed to see if this vehicle was legal. Also if the DMV said it was legal it should be legal. As an unsworn officer I used to vin check these cars for the DMV. Worse thing that happen to me was I stepped in dog poop. Things have changed in law enforcement, and not for the better. That story about the big dude being choked out is just another in many. Cops I knew back in the day would have had the situation handled no problem with out violence.
