DC: Servers and bartenders gathered to protest Ocasio-Cortez

Daily Caller: Servers and bartenders in the Washington, D.C. restaurant industry gathered in protest Thursday against New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for supporting the One Fair Wage campaign to pay tipped workers the full federal minimum wage.

Ocasio-Cortez went to a bar in Queens, New York, in early June to raise awareness for an initiative that was put forward by Restaurant Opportunity Center United (ROC), a government-funded group that claims, if the measure passed, tipped workers would all be paid the same amount, regardless of effort or seniority.

This sparked outrage from many in the restaurant industry, several of whom showed up to protest outside her office. The Daily Caller spoke to the industry workers about their frustration with Ocasio-Cortez’s comments.

  1. She should go spend some time in her own district which is reportedly starting to turn on her, find her highly unlikeable and may not re-elect her next year. All this auditioning for something bigger might end prematurely. One term wonder AOC.

  2. I used to be a bartender and I witnessed something like this. There was a diner on property that employed a bunch of old lady waitresses. The SEIU union came in and promised them a package that included a bump in base salary and an automatic gratuity on every check.

Well these idiot women fell for it. The pay increase was pretty much eaten up with taxes and union dues. They also didn’t realize that according to the law auto gratuities were not allowed. If a customer protested the tip was removed. The tips that stayed were exactly 15%. In the past if your customer ordered a five dollar item and and they left $1 tip at least 25 cents was in your pocket. The customer would now only be charged for a 75 cent gratuity and it was ALL taxed. The icing on the cake was that before the union you only had to declare 8% of your gross sales or your charge tips. You could hide cash tips sometimes. After the union came in every tip was recorded and taxed.

That’s what the government and unions do for the working man / woman.

  3. “Like many other women + working people, I occasionally suffer from imposter syndrome: those small moments, especially on hard days, where you wonder if the haters are right,”

    Narrator: “They are.”

  4. She missed the first step: Insist all employees drink what is being served. Then there would be all kinds of advantages:

Increased job satisfaction because you don’t care about being a shitty bartender.
    Makes AOC look better.
    Reduces stress.
    Encourages carpooling (for the planet!).
    Provides incentive to show up.
Saves on heating costs in winter (for the planet!).
Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
When AOC does something stupid, it is quickly forgotten.

Just tryin to help out, AOC.
Maybe someone can tweet it to her.

  5. I can see why she wants a bartender minimum wage: She was a crappy bartender who made few tips. And the ones she did make were grudgingly given and niggardly in size.

  6. She’s the champion of the grumpy waitress, who has a bad life and aims to make it all YOUR FAULT.
She’s the defender of the Waiter who avoids your table for 20 minutes when you ask him for a refill on your soda. And he only has 3 tables to work.
She’s the guardian of the Drink Girl at the casino who goes around and around the banks of slot machines because she can’t remember who ordered the Diet Coke.

YOU GO, Girl!!! [and take those tacky shoes with you!]

  7. Having worked in the service industry, I made a LOT more in tips when I worked at a company that let me keep my tips, rather than equalizing the tips.
Those that just expected the tips usually let whatever was affecting them that day decide how they approached the customers, while those of us who wanted more actually talked and worked with the customers.
It wasn’t ironic that those of us who actually put in the effort had more fun and a good time with the customers as well.
But, hey, why put in the effort if you didn’t get any more? Thanks unions. You had a purpose once, now go away. Same for AOC and the socialists.

  8. Bartenders tend to make good money especially in the right locations so they’re not willing to give that up.
This kind of tells me she didn’t do too well on the tips when she was tending bar which means she sucked at that job too.
She’s a loser and all losers are drawn to socialism.

  9. @TP – “It must be hard to be wrong on every issue.”
I respectfully disagree. If AOC can be 100% wrong on everything, then anyone can be 100% wrong. Of course it helps to have an IQ at or below a standard 2×4 (Utility Grade).

  10. @Anonymous – yes, Ocasio is likely to be a One And Done Congressman. But count on it that she will remain in Wash DC, helping to skrew up our nation. She’ll be a corrupt lobbyist for some “non-profit” NGO or an overpaid “research fellow” at a Soros-funded Leftist think tank.

It must be hard to be wrong on every issue.

Not at all for AOC types. They really can’t do any better than f**k everything up.

It’s definitely hard on everyone around her, though.

    At any distance.
