Dicky Durbin barred from Communion by Catholic bishop of Springfield

WaTimes: Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Roman Catholic diocese of Springfield, Illinois, is upholding a 2004 decision to block Sen. Dick Durbin from receiving Holy Communion due to his pro-abortion rights views.

A statement issued by Bishop Paprocki on Feb. 13 said Mr. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, was among 14 Catholic members of the U.S. Senate who voted against the Pain-Capable Unborn Children’s Act last month, which would have banned abortions nationwide after 20 weeks post-fertilization. The bill failed to pass cloture — receiving 51 votes in favor and 46 against — and could not proceed to a vote on final passage.

“In April 2004, Sen. Durbin’s pastor, then Msgr. Kevin Vann (now Bishop Kevin Vann of Orange, CA), said that he would be reticent to give Sen. Durbin Holy Communion because his pro-abortion position put him outside of communion or unity with the Church’s teachings on life,” the bishop said in his statement. “My predecessor, now Archbishop George Lucas of Omaha, said that he would support that decision. I have continued that position.”  MORE

  1. repost of Vietvet factoid:
One Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. an aide to Nancy Pelosi visited the Bishop of the Catholic Cathedral in D.C. He told the Cardinal that Ms. Pelosi would be attending the next day’s Mass, and asked if the Cardinal would kindly point her out to the congregation and say a few words that would include calling Pelosi a saint.

The Cardinal replied, “No. I don’t really like the woman, and there are issues of conflict with the Catholic Church over some of Pelosi’s views.”

Pelosi’s aide then said, “Look, I’ll write a check here and now for a donation of $100,000 to you if you’ll just find a way to tell the congregation that you view Nancy Pelosi as a saint.”

The Cardinal thought about it and said, “Well, the Church can use the money, so I’ll work your request into tomorrow’s sermon.” As her aide had promised, Nancy Pelosi appeared for the Sunday worship and seated herself prominently at the forward left side of the center aisle. As promised, at the start of his sermon, the Cardinal pointed out that Pelosi was present.

The Cardinal went on to explain to the congregation, “While Ms. Pelosi’s presence is probably an honor to some, the woman is not numbered among my personal favorite personages. Some of her most egregious views are contrary to tenets of the Church, and she tends to flip-flop on many other issues. Nancy Pelosi is a petty, self-absorbed hypocrite, a thumb sucker, and a nit-wit. Nancy Pelosi is also a serial liar, a cheat, and a thief. I must say, Nancy Pelosi is the worst example of a Catholic I have ever personally witnessed. She married for money and is using her wealth to lie to the American people. She also has a reputation for shirking her Representative obligations both in Washington and in California. The woman is simply not to be trusted.”

The Cardinal concluded, “But, when compared with Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi is a saint.”

I’m guessing the presiding bishop in the Bay Area knows that. Anything Catholic in the Bay Area was corrupted beyond all recognition forty years ago

One of the main seminaries for training Jesuits is in Berkeley, on the campus of UC Berkeley. Needless to say it’s been churning out Proggs in priests clothing since the Sixties. Went to a Jesuit high school in Arizona; there was a drastic difference in older Jesuits and the “new breed” closer to our age

In a way they were highly instructive. If you wanted to know the Church’s position on anything, all you had to do is ask them. Because whatever they said would be the exact opposite of the actual Church position
