BPR: The journey from a lovable purple dinosaur singing saccharin songs for toddlers to a controversy-laden, tantra-teaching, drug-abusing, hate-inspiring sycophant is too bizarre to be fiction, as Peacock’s new docuseries detailing the downward spiral of the once beloved Barney illustrates.
“I Love You, You Hate Me” chronicles the phenomenon of the character created by Texas housewife Sheryl Leach to entertain her two-year-old son Patrick at a time when Mickey Mouse and Sesame Street were the only options for the under 5 set.
While the character wormed his way into the psyche of those not old enough to attend school, becoming a favored and much-loved friend during his long TV run from 1992-2012, he engendered the opposite feelings in parents and adults who created social media groups to bash the purple T.rex.
“Barney Bashing” turned into a national pastime and those who worked on the show found themselves the victims of vitriol and threats.
“They were violent and explicit, death and dismemberment of my family,” said Bob West, the original voice of Barney. “They were going to come and find me, and they were going to kill me.” MORE
Horrible story.

If you have visited Universal Studios in the last few years, you may have found the remnants of an abandoned Barney pavilion. It’s literally the quietest (and at night, the creepiest) place in the park.
If it’s still there next time we go, I’m gonna stand in front of that bronze Barney statue and recite “Ozymandias”.
I love you
You love me
You’re not going to tell Mommy
That I touched you there
in your special little place
You drank Biden’s milk
And didn’t like the taste
I never heard of those parent groups but my kids couldn’t stand Barney. They found his voice annoying and the show did not appeal to them.
(In ’92 my boys were 3 and daughter 6)
Later in elementary school they came home with this song….
“I hate you
You hate me
Let’s get together
And kill Barney”
The show wasn’t loved by a lot of kids
This story is very sad though.
It shows the damage show business can do to the people involved.
One of the happiest days of my life was when my kindergartener son came home in ’99 singing the variation of the Barney song below. I knew I was finally rid of this purple freak…
I hate you, you hate me, let’s tie Barney to a tree
Put a gun to his head, pull the trigger, now he’s dead
First he was purple and now he’s red.
I’ve got to admit I hated that purple SOB but I kept it to myself when I would go to my sisters and see my nephews watching it. They liked it.
I’d take insipid Barney over drag queen story hour any day.
Barney Fife an American institution. Barney the dragon hated by billions along with the Teletubbies should of drop kicked thru the goal posts of life.
“Caillou”….
most abusive children’s cartoon/show on….
at this time….IMHO.
Canadian Tire (think Lowe’s but MUCH SHITTIER) ran an advertisement for years with the same male character who became Known as “Canadian Tire Guy”.
This asshole became HATED by men everywhere.
In every commercial he hat the perfect “Wonder Tool” sold exclusively at CT for whatever stupid job needed to be done. NONE of the Tools were anything a real Tradesman would use.
The result, he was severely mocked. I hated the SOB. Think Soy boy uses a multi tip $7 miracle screwdriver to hang a picture for his wife type shit. He was hated for years afterwards.
He wasn’t a soy boy but he really was the jackass clogging up the Sears buying the 700 piece socket set for $39.95.
Google or maybe Y-tube Canadian Tire guy commercials. Worse than the guy who spray painted his head to hide his baldness…
“Y-tube Canadian Tire guy commercials” Thanks Kcir, that took me down a rabbit hole I really didn’t want to be in. Only in Canada, eh?

i WAS DOING MY INTERNSHIP IN GALVESTON WHEN A GROUP OF TEENS BEAT UP BARNEY @ A MALL APPEARANCE IN HOUSTON. CA.’96 DON’T WORRY, I HAVE AN ALIBI FOR THAT DAY.
Has anyone ever seen the film Death to Smoochy? Robin Williams, Ed Norton…. hilarious!!
My kid loved Barney. I found him annoying but harmless compared to a lot of other crap on the tube.
Guess we were both the right age.
