Doomed cargo ship was being piloted by a local crew who were trained to avoid obstacles

DMUK:
The cargo ship that smashed into the Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore overnight was piloted by a specialized crew trained to avoid obstacles at ports, it has been revealed.

The ship, a 948-foot-long DALI operated by Singaporean company Synergy Group, collided with the 1.2-mile bridge shortly after 1.26am as it left port.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said on Tuesday morning it appears none of the 22 crewmembers were injured, as he revealed it was being steered by the specialist pilots.

‘Pilots move ships in and out of the Port of Baltimore,’ he said at a press conference, noting that the specialist pilots depart the ships as soon as they are in open water.

Officials were quick to rule out the catastrophe as intentional or an act of terrorism, and an early Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) report found the container ship ‘lost propulsion’ as it was leaving port.  more

  1. “Officials were quick to rule out the catastrophe as intentional or an act of terrorism…”

…I bet they WERE, since that’s what the illegitimate “government” that treasonously controls this nation TOLD them to say, and being “good” li’l Democrats, well…

  2. Maybe should have had a escort tug or two take it to open water. Hope for the best plan for the worst. Same for having an vice president that knows something and has a brain.

  3. At this point it could be as simple as some kind of systems failure, but we need more details.
    Details, details, details.
    What exacty happened and why!
If it was a mechanical failure, then why?
    Poor design?
    Poor maintenance?
    Poor training?
    Skullduggery?
Drill baby drill… down for the facts.
Then the question: will we ever see the details or will we get some ginned up explanation because the truth is too ugly? A legitimate question in these days of greed and disinformation. Question everything, but don’t jump to conclusions.

  4. I’ve known a few Bay Pilots. There is a special school they go to for specific training in order to get their certification. it used to be highly regarded 30 years ago…

  5. Kinda reminds me of this old chestnut –

A battle ship was on exercise at sea in bad weather. The captain was on the bridge. It was foggy. Just after dark the look out spotted a light on the starboard side. The captain asked if it was steady or moving. The look out replied the light was steady meaning they were on direct collision course with that ship! The captain ordered the lookout signal to the other ship:

“Change course 20 degrees. We are on collision course.”

The signal came back ‘”Advisable for you to change course.”

The captain signalled ‘”I am a captain. Change course 20 degrees.”

“I am a seaman second class. You had better change course 20 degrees” came the reply.

The captain was furious. He sent back ‘”I am a battleship. Change course!”

Back came the signal, “I am a lighthouse. Your call.”

  6. Jethro,

    “highly regarded 30 years ago”

So was Harvard a few years ago.

Cheers friends, I got to go climb a few roofs now.

  7. ^ if the light was to starboard with a zero bearing rate, there must have been a hell of a current to make the battleship slip to the right. Otherwise the light would have been on the bow.

  8. Baltimore. River pilots are very highly paid , like mid-six figure salaries. You can bet, just like the airlines are now doing with their pilots, that DEI played a part in hiring less than qualified, preferred minorities to these positions in democrat controlled Baltimore. Did that play a part in the crash? We will never know.

And if the U.S. taxpayers are going to pay to rebuild, as Joe so generously offered, we damn well better reduce transportation funds to Maryland to offset it.
