Legal Insurrection:

Duquesne University Education Professor Gary Shank has been on leave since mid-September for using the N-word in a class discussion about why the word is inappropriate.

Shank gave students permission to use the word for the sake of their discussion, and this set off a firestorm.

Now the school has terminated his employment. more

SNIP: Keep in mind, the same people who were offended listen to the top 40 and hear much much worse.

  1. There is no such thing in the abstract as an inappropriate word.

Now this misguided do-gooder can adopt the correct point of view (free speech) when he files his wrongful termination lawsuit.

  2. I’m waiting to hear about the class in which the professor just stands in front of the students and says nothing for fear of being fired for offending some one, some how.

  3. When the use of the word nigger was prohibited for use by non-blacks it advanced the power of the thought police. Wait for hate speech crime to be replaced by hate thought srime.

  4. The professor has grounds for defamation as well as wrongful termination. The article mentioned that the U said he “used a racial slur” in class. But he did not use the word as a slur directed towards anyone. By saying that he used a slur implies that the professor intended to communicate racial animosity towards students in his class, or towards black people generally. The fact that he was suspended and then fired (probably in violation of the University’s own disciplinary processes) demonstrates harm and therefore defamation.
