  1. Claudia, muscles need glycogen and readily available energy that sugar provides actually helps during a workout.
While running marathons I’ve eaten candy, potatoes, pretzels, and anything that can provide an energy boost.
    Caffeine also helps…

  2. Yes Brad, protein is good post workout but does nothing except provide 4 calories per gram for energy as a pre-workout.
Not the wisest suggestion here folks, I wouldn’t take Brad’s advice.

You likely subscribe to the ridiculous & totally wrong-headed idea that you should have 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.
A lot of bodybuilders fall for that trap by companies to sell more protein powder.
You body simply can’t absorb it so it is basically pissed away.
It’s your money you are wasting so I really shouldn’t be bothered but I hope others do their own research.

  3. Maybe you guys should read the article. It’s 100 percent accurate. Same with the pre workouts. Falling off that sugar highs a bitch during an hour leg work out. Pre workouts are a scam. And some of them have been known to cause heart problems. Muscles need protein when they are under duress. But what do I know. I’m just an old school lifter.

  4. Without kidding around now, on a heavy Mountain bike day with serious fast climbs & driving descents (pushing corners not coasting):

I use a hell of a strong coffee in the morning to kick start the engine.
I am a Morning person so I’m jamming 3-4 bananas on the drive up to the trail. Sometime a few clementines.
    I pre-hydrate with water.

The odd time I had simple sugars like a Chocolate Bar or a piece of left over Pie, the ENERGY LEFT Quickly & I was Gassed by the 3rd or 4th stage.

If I had eggs or sausage, It was like riding with a brick in my gut.

Too much caffeine and You get dehyrdated & your mouth gets pasty.

I eat well After the ride and esp in summer it is actually VERY common for guys to have a Pint or 2 of Real & Natural beer. That includes the actual semi pro & retired racers.

But, this is still not weight lifting and people have their own preferences.

    Just keep moving!

  5. I wonder if cocaine will help with my sets? At Kcir, I keep some candy bars in my hydration pack during the cold months (they melt in the summer). While riding I usually get in the zone then forget I’ve got to ride back. Nothing worse than running out of steam 20 miles out on nasty trails.

  6. Kcir, with you on morning distance trail runs. Drink a lot of water night before which make me get up and piss and refill my water, repeat and rinse. In morning coffee or diet mountain dew, a couple of bananas, and maybe a Budwiser or two if I’m not trying to set a speed record.Gatorade zero while running, Lots of protein after. I run trails for sanity and maybe come cardio, do manual labor all week at a seasoned age and raw sugar is a no go.

  7. For long distance trail riding or running, carbo-loading & hydrating the day or days before is key.
Build up your glycogen stores to be ready for the coming energy expenditure.

Eating a lot of protein just prior to exercise makes zero sense.
No one has ever used the term “protein loading.”

  8. One thing you NEVER want to do is drink a Coke after a marathon.

I did the Disney World marathon one year and they handed out bananas, snacks, water and cans of soft drinks afterwards.
My dumbass said, “oh, a Coke sounds good.”
It felt like I swallowed battery acid.
    Burned like a peptic ulcer.
They only gave away soft drinks that one year.
I likely wasn’t the only fool to drink one…

  9. That said, a cold beer is wonderful after a marathon.
    Or during, actually.
Many people stop in “Germany” in Epcot at mile 25 during the marathon and get a beer to drink as they hit the finish line.
Two beers after a marathon = 8 beers at any other time.

Just got back from a hour 20 chest and shoulder. No sugar added. I’m low cal man. So, go pick you up some quality Whey Protein. Drink a glass full 30 minutes before your ride. I’m betting it’ll be an epic ride. Carb loading’s not bad either. That’s true sugar. I’ve been doing the KETO thing so long I don’t feel right in the head if I consume to many carbs. That’s my excuse for inflammatory posts from here on out.

  11. PHenry, if that’s true then no wonder exercise is good for you.
During sleep my heart rate sometimes goes down to 32 beats per minute.
I just checked my watch and my resting heart rate average is 43 BPM.
Without exercise I would likely have a 60+ average.

To each their own but I wish Rush had exercised.
    He despised it.
One of the few things I disagreed with him about.
