F1 driver Carlos Sainz chases down robbers who stole his $540K watch

NYP: Formula One Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr. was robbed of his luxury watch hours after placing third at the Italian Grand Prix Sunday, but the speedster was able to chase down the crooks and get it back.

Sainz, 29, of Spain, was targeted near the Armani Hotel in Milan for his $540,000 Richard Mille timepiece while still wearing his team uniform, according to ESPN.

The driver, his trainer and witnesses then gave chase to the suspects and were able to retrieve the watch, the report said, citing Italian media.

Sainz was then filmed catching his breath as police handcuffed a suspect.

The Spaniard then took to X to discuss the incident.

It’s not a watch, it’s a TIMEPIECE, very think, precious metal, has the work MAX at 12:00, self winding, transparent back, so practical….. SO EXPENSIVE…. could be compensating for…. um er huh? Or just showing off….

    Nobody NEEDS it.

  2. Been to Milan. Apparently getting robbed on the street is commonplace.
I caught a 10-year-old kid trying to pick pocket me and I had him on the ground in an arm hold. His mother came out attacking me. She taught him to steal.

  3. Richard Mille specialize in timepieces with complications. I wear mechanical watches, but complications never have interested me. The watch magazines and such are all gaga over such things and that is why they don’t interest me either. Give me a WWII vintage pilot’s watch, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms or Rolex Sub Mariner in stainless steel and I’m more interested.

I like what are known as “tool watches.” Rolex still markets a Sub Mariner but it is more that most young men can justify these days. Squale is probably the best bet for a mechanical diving watch under a thousand.

  4. He shouldn’t be bent over catching his breathe. These guys are in extreme shape and fitness. Maybe it was just the gravity of the situation and facing a robbery that caused him to bend down for a bit.
I can’t fathom a 540K watch. Now Richard Mille sponsors the Ferrari team and this maybe a loaner. Granted an F1 driver can easily afford one, but that kind of money is on another level.

  5. If you can afford a $540K why risk your life to retrieve it? He could have just as easily been killed or maimed. When you’re dead you can’t take your money. Better yet, why even wear such a valuable item you are making yourself a target, the robber could have just as easily killed him instead of letting him live.

  6. @Say what?: Please feel free to walk around flaunting valuables and cash bulging from your pockets that is your right.

The laws of human nature dictate what will happen next. You can wax philosophical right/wrong from the grave.

  8. They certainly have the worst security at sporting events. You would think they could hire a few guys to keep an eye on your valuables. Why do you think baseball players wear all that gold jewelry on the field?

  9. The protagonist here does not garner much sympathy…the filthy rich narcissist, vainly flaunting his riches, in front of the starving have-nots, shows courage protecting his money and luckily lived to tell. Hubba! Hubba!

Meanwhile that poor cop, who would be tasked with apprehending the perp, may not be so lucky, nor the innocent bystander.

All this so this narcissistic fool can show-off.

But if you have that much money it really does seem crazy to risk your life in that way.
