Finding Lost Bullet Holes

Backwoods Home: In 1912 at the Olympics in Stockholm, George Patton, Jr. competed in the first modern Pentathlon.  It is said he was cheated of his victory when, in the pistol competition, the scorers couldn’t find one shot and presumed it a miss.  Most of the competitors were shooting .22s; Patton had chosen to vie with a .38 caliber Colt revolver, and his larger bullets hit so close together that the referees couldn’t account for all the holes.  Those who knew him were certain he hadn’t missed a shot.

I was reminded of that recently when testing the excellent EDC X9 9mm pistol from Wilson Combat for On Target magazine.  After shooting from a Caldwell Matrix rest on a concrete bench at 25 yards, I approached the target to find three holes, one larger and more irregular than the other two.  How could that be a five-shot group?

Secrets of the ninja: when you’re not sure if you have a “double,” two shots through the same hole, one thing you want to do is turn the target over.  Often times, the exit holes will be easier to distinguish such things in, than clustered entry holes.  Sure enough: there were three distinct radii in the larger, ragged hole.  MORE

  1. So I guess the moral of the story is if you keep aiming at the same spot sooner or later you hit the same spot. Stupid story. Anybody that shoots a lot has experienced this. Bad ass hand gun. Wilson Combats got a big winner in that frame. It’s a Glock killer. Except it’s 6 times the price.

  2. The X9 is probably the best looking 9mm 1911 ever made. Had to settle for a Springfield CCC 9mm, the X9 is too expensive. However, I have had that problem with the Springfield.

  4. I always put night sights on my handguns.Glock, Meprolight or Truglo. Glock night sights are pretty crappy. The Springfield came stock with sights similar to the Dawson sights. They wre fine during the day, my only objection was the ability to see the front sight at night. it was invisible. Does anyone make a set with tritium under the fiber? For me that would be perfect.

It’s invisible because of that Fing light show they put on the rear site. Do the people that design these sites actually shoot? I don’t think so. Just show me my front site, I’ll do the rest.

  6. Agreed. I have a unique need for Tritium, and it doesn’t hurt to practice after dark sometimes. I guess with a light you would see the fiber.

My ‘recycling’ of cardboard consists of using it as a target backer, easier to see the double+ hits. I’m not gonna say its often but it has happened. If I was to get another pistol it would be an X9. The X9 site photo has been my tablet wallpaper for at least a year now.

Long past shooting paper. I love shooting steel on the move. There’s no doubt on hits. On a budget? Find some one with a lazer or water jet. Find some 1018 1/2 thick and ask them to cut you some 8 inch rounds with a hole to hang them from. Price it out first.

  8. MJA, thanks for these articles!! Do you like the X9? A lot of people are afraid to admit it because it’s so expensive, about 3 Grand.

AR-500 steel is cheap these days, buy from Vets. I have a 12″ plate with a 4″ center clapper plate. Dingding. I’m a little leery of shooting steel close range with a handgun, got peppered once shooting with a relative at a “safe” spinner. Frangible is great but expensive. I like shooting on the move with long guns too. All this in my backyard, I’ve had some local LEOs come by to test or zero.

Everyone in this neighborhood has something, it is noisy on the weekends. Probably why we have drones overhead all the time. 😀
