Fire Shuts Down GM’s Electric Car Plant, Executives Blame ‘Battery Materials’

Breitbart:

General Motors’ (GM) “Factory Zero” plant was temporarily shut down after a fire broke out. The plant produces Electric Vehicles (EVs), which have a history of catching fire, though GM executives said “battery materials” were the cause.

Factory Zero, also known as Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, has been celebrated by President Joe Biden’s administration for its all-electric production. On Tuesday, the plant closed after a fire filled the plant with heavy smoke.

By Wednesday, GM executives blamed the fire on a forklift accident and said the plant was up and running, though portions remained closed, according to the Detroit Free Press: MORE

  1. @Burner,

A quick look at some basic numbers:

Even when government subsidizes electric vehicles, they cost more than ICE vehicles.
Manufacturers are losing money in each unit sold.

EV are not designed to go past 100k miles. New battery pack $40-50k. New ICE will set you back ~$5-7k. And that ICE will go 200k miles minimum.

Time: no amount of money ever bought a moment of time. ICE range usually 300 miles, refill in 10 minutes. EV maybe 200 miles, minimum 20 minutes to get a 60% charge (from 20 to 80% fast charge cycle) so you’re not going another 200 miles.

  2. Hamtramck? It was an old Polish community of simple folks who made a living working for the Big 3. I’m surprised anything lives there anymore. There is a video on UT from a guy who drove through it a few years ago. It looked like the most run done burg I’ve ever seen. Decrepit and sad. I doubt this Factory Zero will improve it very much.
