Florida man uses ‘stand your ground law’ against Iguana

WRCBTV:
A Florida man accused of killing an iguana last year wanted a charge of animal cruelty dismissed on the basis of the state’s “stand your ground” law. A judge has denied his motion.

PJ Nilaja Patterson was arrested after allegedly beating, dragging and kicking a 3-foot iguana in Lake Worth, Florida, on September 2, 2020, according to a probable cause affidavit. The animal died as Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control was transporting it to be euthanized, according to the affidavit.

Patterson’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the charge, but Judge Jeffrey Gillen denied the motion on Friday. more here

  1. Do I hear an echo? (-:

I’ll simply repeat my words from last night:

Is animal cruelty sickening? Yes. Yes it is.

But is it criminal? No, or at least it shouldn’t be.

Crimes are actions that violate another person’s rights. An iguana is not a person. When you can show me an iguana signing a contract with full understanding of that that signifies, then I’ll change my position immediately.

  2. I thought shooting iguanas and killing boa constrictors (both invasive species) was legal in Florida? Or do you need a license or permit from the state to kill them?
Kind of like the Kings deer in England’s royal forest. Where’s Robin Hood with his bow and arrow when you need him?

  3. “Crimes are actions that violate another person’s rights…”

No… crimes are acts (or omissions) that are designated as crimes under the law. When these laws are violated, that violates the rights of the “people” (all of them).
