Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party soars ahead in polls

DUTCH right-wing Freedom Party has soared ahead to lead the polls ahead of the parliamentary elections.

The party, led by the controversial Geert Wilders, would beat prime minister Mark Rutte’s ruling conservative liberals if elections were held today.

The Freedom Party (PVV) can count on 29 seats out of the 150-seat chamber, according to the latest IPSOS poll, making it the largest party in the Netherlands.

Pollsters said the PVV’s populist stance has attracted voters.

The data suggests Eurosceptic Mr Wilders could become the Netherlands’ next prime minister, potentially spelling the end of Dutch membership of the .

Frustrations have grown with the current coalition government and an ongoing court trial involving Mr Wilders has boosted his support.

The PVV founder allegedly led a chant demanding fewer Moroccans reside in the Netherlands and has been accused of inciting a hate speech after asking supporters if they wanted “fewer or more Moroccans” in the country.

When the crowd shouted “fewer”, he responded: “We’ll take care of it.”

He is currently at the centre of a court case accused of discriminating against the Dutch-Moroccan community.

  1. I’ve been wondering lately about this ruling and when it will come down. I think he will either be found not guilty our case dismissed. I’d prefer not guilty, but it may not matter, depending how backward the Netherlands is–that is if they have a system whereby people can be retried over and over by officials who don’t like the verdict they got the first time.

    I know he did have to endure a trial last summer but if I recall correctly those were different charges.
