NEW YORK (Reuters) – General Motors Co <GM.N> has agreed to settle federal lawsuits by as many as 203 plaintiffs over defective ignition switches in its vehicles, a Friday court filing shows.
Settlement terms are confidential, but the accord could also resolve hundreds of state court claims, as well, lawyers for the automaker said in the filing in Manhattan federal court.
Lawyers for the settling plaintiffs could not immediately be reached for comment. A GM spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
GM has been defending against hundreds of lawsuits over faulty ignition switches that could cause engines to stall and prevent airbags from deploying in crashes.
The defect has been linked to 124 deaths and 275 injuries, and prompted a recall that began in February 2014. more here

This will make GM’s ignition defect look like chump-change.

GM needed to be split up in individual components along time ago. Make them sell off their Truck, Passenger Car, and Performance cars to individual buyers. AMERICAN buyers.
Now if they would only pay the Delphi salaried workers their pensions…
Except for part of my misspent youth (when I drove a Mazda, VW and a demon-possessed Toyota), I’ve always had a GM product in my driveway. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
As an aside, as related to me by a locksmith: One of the biggest contributors to ignition switch failure is the tendency of certain people (primarily women, it seems) to hang four pounds of shit on their key rings. No switch was designed to take that, particularly these GM switches.
The ‘ignition switch’ controversy is a red herring; the vehicle can still be steered and stopped absent power. If this is ‘news’ to you, you need to take due notice thereof and govern yourselves accordingly, or surrender your license and take Mr. Bus.
