GM to Take $1.6 Billion Hit as It Scales Back Electric Vehicle Operations

(The Epoch Times)—General Motors said on Oct. 14 that it will bear a $1.6 billion loss to scale back its electric vehicle (EV) operations, citing weaker expected demand following recent U.S. policy changes that ended federal EV tax credits and loosened emissions rules.

The Detroit-based automaker said its Audit Committee approved the loss on Oct. 7, covering the three months ended Sept. 30. The company noted that the loss is part of its plan to realign EV production and factory operations to better match customer demand.

The decision was made after the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit on Sept. 30, part of a broader policy rollback under President Donald Trump.

The credit, established under former President Joe Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, had been a key driver of EV sales in the United States. Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on July 4, which set Sept. 30 as the final date for receiving EV purchase credits, effectively terminating the benefit. more

  1. If you go to GM’s website all they can talk about is how diverse their organization is. They are the most inept organization that is not bankrupt in this country. Their CEO Mary Barra couldn’t reason her way out of a wet paper bag. She miss-manages everything. GM’s management for the last 10 years has always talked about how in 3 years they are going to corner the EV market, they collect their stock options and then move the needle for the corner of the EV market another 3 years after not producing any. The whole orginization is a woke joke.

  2. Michigan’s governor, FolderFace Whitmer, sunk a ton of our taxpayer money into this. NO ONE wanted it. She just loves to throw away our money.

She’s in the midst of throwing away even more money on a battery company. She gave a man who promised to establish an EV battery company here, but reneged after he received the money. You know what she is doing now? The same man is trying it again with a different company that she gave almost as much of our money to, and he is in the process of taking the money and running just like last time.

My guess is that he split the $$$$$$$ with her.

  3. The decision was made after the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit…

IOW, they bet that the tax credit would be permanent.
That’s not stupid, that’s brain dead.

  4. That’s right, GM, blame government policies for your failure and then when you’re about to go bankrupt, beg for a government bailout.

That company should have gone under decades ago.

    You poor Bastages.
They build WORSE SHIT than GM.

Ford is NOT Great, but they are a TINY bit better than the SHITTY TWOSOME. 2011, 2011, 2014, all still on the road and My 2025 MID ROOF Transit-250 has made HVAC work MUCH EASIER for $20,000 less than a Mercedes Sprinter. I doubt it will last 7 years though…

  6. Bad Brad – Here is a good discussion about the GM 6.2L debacle.
Bad cranks with 0-20W are not a good mix, so GM says put 40 Weight in the engines with bad cranks. That’s a band-aid. The correct fix is to replace the engine with the bad cranks which they do if the engine eats itself. Even then you may get a Mulligan engine where it has the same issue. If I had one of them I’d put 40W in it and then put it up for sale ASAP Pronto! The 6.2 has a bad name now!
Lake Speed Jr does some excellent videos on oil.

  7. Anymouse that article you linked to is just vastly wrong. Propaganda but believe what lies you want. You do save money on gas for an EV. My Model X gets the equivalent of 115 miles per gallon and it isn’t arguable that you don’t save big money if you drive a lot; but you have to actually be good at math and you actually have to do the math. Something this board has proven time and time again as being incapable of. Then the usual suspects here link to these BS articles. Shameful

My youngest son has one. The dealer ship called him a set up an appointment to swap the motor out. He shows up and they tell him GM just issued an order to run them until the blow up and then they’ll replace them. The problem is the cranks were never hardened. They also have some big time valve train issues. He’s has trani parts replaced under a recall twice. I’m driving a 06 Duramax and thinking I’ll probably look at a new truck next year. The things been bullet proof. All be damned if I know what I’m going to replace it with. All the diesel trucks are having major issues.

(That was the end of my Volkswagen “Farfegnugen.” 🤣)

  10. My ’69 Bug: (unknown mileage) looks good, runs good. No airbags, no ECU, no GPS tracking devices, no catalytic convertor, smog exempt. No power steering, no power brakes. No air conditioner.
Leaks a little oil. Fun to drive, gets 24 MPG.

  11. The Big Three were idiots in the first place for jumping on that government bandwagon. The taxpayer will be bailing them out soon. I will never get my pension back now.
