  1. I love both of mine. My first is a Blue Sky that I use as a plinker and my second is a Winchester DCM gun. One of my greatest thrills was taking my first two elk with my Winchester M-1. I soon realized that carrying a Garand at 11,500 was like trying to carry a telephone pole after a while. Great rifles!

  2. My dad loved Grands. He had a few but the first one I ever shot was the tanker model I still have today.
I always thought if you were firing at an enemy with that gun they sure as hell would know it.

Dad always kept 10 clips in a go bag next to that tanker in the gun safe, just in case.

I carry on the tradition since his death and it gives me a lot of peace that the greatest battle implement ever devised is not far away. Just in case, as my dad used to say.

  3. I believe that that Marine
    with the Garand in the
    Guadalcanal photo
    probably “liberated” it from
one of the US Army relief force
soldiers. At that time the Marine
issue rifle was still the “03”.

  4. @ Bad Brad. I could be wrong, but I think he wants one from the war. He has some other rifles from the war. Wait till I ask him about new before you go through the trouble of checking the new Springfield. THANK you bunches. I will let you know what he’s looking for.

  5. Always wanted one but cold never justify buying one.

When my brothers’ NG unit was “upgraded” to the M16 they had to surrender they had three Garandes in the company with serial numbers under 1,000, one of those had a serial number under 100.

  6. True that there’s nothing wrong with using “clip” on this one.

Also nothing wrong with saying something like: I emptied the magazine of my Garand.

For the uninitiated, that clip still goes in a magazine – the hole in the rifle you put it in.

Clips load magazines. Always. Even the Garand.

The difference with this one is that the clip stays on the cartridges when the rifle’s magazine is loaded.

Plain Jane, you can check out Gunbroker.com, but if Brad is able to inspect a used one first you’re probably going to get one in better shape. Quality is going to depend on how much it’s been shot and the care it’s been given over the decades. Something an experienced man like Brad should be able to tell. I would trust his opinion in matters like this.

I prefer to handle and see the older guns first since they are not brand new and so not under factory warranty, but it’s one way to get whatever you want.

There are new ones being made, but you said he wanted one from the war.

I’ve gotten a few sweet deals there that no local shop could beat.

  7. M1 is too damned heavy for scamping about the woods. Great for sit and shoot. Get something that is quick to point that can be handled in the confines of a vehicle. An AK or AR variant would be be practical. M1’s are for nostalgic romantics.
