Handcuffed Alabama woman steals police cruiser, leads pursuit

Police1: BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A woman was taken into custody Wednesday morning after authorities said she stole a Birmingham police cruiser and led lawmen on a lengthy interstate chase.

Police identified the woman as 35-year-old Leah Nicole Letson. Authorities said she robbed an elderly man moments before she stole the police cruiser.

The incident began about 9:45 a.m. when an officer observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road on Jefferson Avenue on the city’s west side with what appeared to be an altercation going on inside the vehicle between a male and a female. Sgt. Rod Mauldin said a female suspect was detained and secured with handcuffs inside the patrol unit. read more

  1. ‘The theft came just four days after a Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service truck was stolen from the bay at Station 8 in Kingston.’

You NEVER take the keys out of an emergency vehicle, even if it has any to begin with. Too hard to explain that someone died because the keys rode out in the outgoing shift’s pocket.

That said, you CAN close the bay doors, since you could always drive through them closed if need be. Not pretty, but repairable, and not going to seriously damage your vehicle. But if the cops can’t catch someone in a large, bright red vehicle that accellerates like a slug and corners like a turd, then I’m not surprised they have so much trouble capturing an intercept vehicle…
