HAPPY 249th! – IOTW Report

HAPPY 249th!

Fox 5-

The Marine Corps celebrates its birthday on Nov. 10, which marks when the Continental Marines were founded on that day in 1775 during the Revolutionary War.

This year is the 249th anniversary of the founding, when Captain Samuel Nicholas set up the first Marine Corps recruiting headquarters at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, Penn., looking for “a few good men,” according to the Marines official website.

  1. My oldest nephew who was a Lt. JG in the Navy called his 2 younger brothers who were both Marines fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan the men’s dept. of the Navy. And I agree, although I think that Navy Seals are even bigger bad asses. One of my nephews who is the same age as my son received a purple heart for injuries incurred when an IED exploded in his face when he was a gunner on a Humvee, thank God for his helmet and his face goggles which saved him from far worse injuries. The pictures that my brother-in-law showed me afterwards were horrifying. Gung ho and Semper Fi Marines you deserve it.

  2. I can’t march worth a damn and was always a half step off and constantly getting yelled at by company commander in Navy boot camp, so I would’ve probably washed out of MCRD in San Diego. But the Navy had enough faith in me and trained me very well to be a very good plane captain (crew chief) in an F-4 Phantom fighter squadron which I am extremely thankful for. I had more responsibility at 20-22 years of age than any other job that I ever had. And it gave a greater appreciation of America than others in the boomer generation when I got out and started college in the mid 70’s. May God continue to bless all the veterans tomorrow on Veterans Day from the youngest World War 2 vets who are all in their late 90’s and getting fewer by the day, the Korean War vets, all the Vietnam Vets and all the the younger veterans who served later after Vietnam.

  3. Happy Birthday, USMC. Marines are right to be proud.

All I ask is to remember that the D-Day invasion was a US Army thing along with the army of Britain and Canada.

That is US Army plus US Army Air Corps plus US Army Rangers. They got it done.

  4. @Geoff

I figure among the WWII vets still around, the youngest would have been born in 1929, if there is one like that who still lives. That would have made him 16 at the tail end of WWII. A guy like that could have lied about his age and got in the Armed Forces. He would be 95 today.

  5. MY dad was born in 1929, he missed World War 2 while his 3 older brothers were all WW 2 veterans, two Navy and one Army paratrooper and sniper. But he enlisted in the Air Force in 1947 and became a Sgt. and was in Berlin during the Berlin airlift in 1948 and got out of the USAF just before the Korean War started in June 1950. My father-in-law was born in 1928 and served as a Sgt. in the USAF during the Korean War as a crew chief on B-29’s and served an additional 30 years in the Wash. ANG. I am the only veteran amongst my 3 younger brothers since the Vietnam war ended in 1973 who didn’t have to serve after that war ended. May God bless all of our veterans no matter how old or how young they are, they all deserve our respect.

  6. It is my understanding Mr. Vance will be bringing his own supply of crayons. So Kamala and sleepy Joe can take theirs along when they leave the premises, though neither ever understood the proper use of that product.
