House adopts contentious rules that make ousting speaker more difficult

(The Center Square) – After a brief and intense debate, lawmakers passed the Republican-proposed House rules package, 215-209, for the incoming 119th Congress Friday evening.

Besides typical procedural updates and reforms, the resolution is stuffed with Republican objectives, such as eliminating the House’s Diversity and Inclusion office, authorizing subpoenas of officials connected to the investigation of the Biden family’s finances, and requiring congressional financial audits of potentially inflationary legislation.

Notably, the new rules make ousting the House speaker more difficult by allowing only members of the majority party to introduce motions to vacate, plus require at least eight cosponsors from the majority party.

Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., said raising the threshold is a commonsense way to prevent unwarranted challenges to the House speaker’s authority. more

  1. If the toilet is clogged because of a stuck turd, one might use an ever ready and handy plunger to remove the problem. The Republicans on the other hand would remove the plunger.

  2. If the description above is all it takes to remove the speaker, doesn’t seem out of whack. It prevents the minority party or a single wacko in the majority from creating a nuisance, while allowing even a small contingent to still do so.
I saw a video from MTG which I shared yesterday, she and others forced removal of ‘nongender’ terms. Who knows what other garbage is in there.

  3. About half of Congress (and maybe evern more) are treasonous, corrupt pieces of shit who need to be removed before we can ever trust our government again. And that group includes the McConnell rinos.

  4. @Left Coast Dan — Agreed. If my arithmetic is correct, it still takes about 4% or so of House majority party members to unseat the Speaker. Seems reasonable to me, too.

Of course, cynical me is sure that if it seems reasonable, they’re hiding aces, knives, and hand grenades up their sleeves.
