While the bill is almost certain to die in the Senate, Norton believes the House decision “paves the way for a vote on H.R. 51, the Washington D.C. Admission Act.”
DC:
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House of Representatives endorsed statehood for the District of Columbia for the first time in American history with the passage of the Democrats’ sweeping voting rights bill Friday.
“There is no other way to describe it – this is historic,” said Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s non-voting congresswoman. “After decades of struggle, the House of Representatives recognized today that the time has come for D.C. statehood.”
Holmes Norton has introduced a bill calling for some version of D.C. statehood every single term she’s served, but with 200 cosponsors, this is the furthest the efforts have ever gone.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer became the latest high profile Democrat after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to officially express support for statehood, calling it one of the Party’s top three priorities.
Schumer said the endorsement is about “empowering people… D.C. has had a referendum, they want statehood and we should have them be allowed to vote in federal elections– have congressmen, have senators, etc.”
Opponents argue that Democrats support the measure only because it would likely ensure them two additional Democratic senators. D.C.’s City Council is made up entirely of Democrats. more here
Carve out the Federal District and let the rest of it have “statehood” if it likes – or give it back to VA and MD.
It will sink of its own corruption without Federal subsidies – and everyone knows it.
This is another “throw-a-bone-to-the-negroes” feel-good bullshit bill.
izlamo delenda est …
I can understand why the Democrats want D.C. Statehood.
And that is the reason it should be denied.
The “Voting Rights” bill? Let me guess…prohibits any kind of cleaning up of voter fraud, allows felons, dead people, and illegals to vote? In other words, solidifying the Dems base. And anyone opposed to it is a racist.
@Tim – I wholeheartedly agree. But let’s take it one step farther: The District should have govt office buildings ONLY and zero residences with the possible exception of the White House and the VP’s Naval Observatory quarters. With nobody to represent, the question of DC statehood becomes totally moot.
Uncle Al – YES X 1,000!
Most of Congress already represents D.C.
Founding Fathers knew it would be a cesspool so it was carved out.
Never change that status as it is a Democrat shithole.
Two more Senate seats. Jeez….I wonder what party would benefit?
Btw, the framers had good reasons NOT to give it statehood. But Norton is much smarter than Madison et al so we’ll follow her lead.
We are soooo screwed.
The whole purpose of a federal district was to prevent a state, should the capital reside in one, from passing punitive laws, or establishing policies, in retaliation against federal officials the state may dislike.
This may be 2019, but that would still happen with Progs in charge of DC.
This will go nowhere.
MAGA!
Iz it just me or iz DC Statehood associated with anti-corruption and voter rights the biggest Oxymoron to come riding down the rails since Joe Biden rode the Crazy Train to Delaware?
Fine, give it statehood. Then nuke if from orbit, just to be sure.
(Though, I’d settle for a 500′ tsunami.)
They just want to vote for Marion Barry again. I know he’s dead but be sure the constituents that would put him over the top to win are too. So the informed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been told.
2 More Votes, 2 More Votes
To Understand The District of Columbia acquaint yourself with the Act of 1871 . . .

It’s almost, not quite, but almost, like The Constitution is an urban legend. The Supreme Court says it says whatever they say it says. Even when they said it said something different before. They say it says what is clearly not written. On that holiday decoration the proles claim is a real, actual constitution. Like the real, actual slivers of the real, actual cross. They even say that what is clearly written, on that holiday decoration, is not really there.
And the proles pray, “Muh Constitution. Muh Rule of Law. Muh country tis of thee.” A sweet land of rules subject to change without notice.
