‘I was ‘naïve’: Brooke Shields slams Barbara Walters for ‘practically criminal’ interview after Calvin Klein ad

BPR:

Actress Brooke Shields strongly criticized Barbara Walters for the now-retired journalist’s “practically criminal” interview with her forty years ago.

Speaking with Dax Shepard on a recent episode of “The Armchair Expert” podcast, Shields recalled the 1981 interview and called out now 92-year-old Walters for what she sees as offensive questioning that had nothing to do with journalism.

Shields shared that she has recently been reflecting on her early career and how she was oversexualized as a young teen.

In 1980, at age 15, the young actress was featured in a Calvin Klein ad campaign modeling the brand’s jeans. One particular commercial that created national outrage shows Shields laying on the floor and asking: “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”

In 1981, soon after the ad aired, Shields sat down for an interview with Walters. The actress, now 56, claimed that Walters asked her a series of offensive questions, including asking what her body measurements were. more

  1. Forty years? A wee bit late to be airing the dirty laundry now, don’cha’think?
Besides, what can be done about it?
    First world problems.

  2. More whinny outrage triggered Hollywood hypocrites.

I found nothing “criminal” in that short clip. And if she has a beef with the way she was treated, blame her mom, she was the parent in the room and was responsible for the well-being of the child.

“In the end, the campaign played a huge role in launching her modeling and acting careers and was a massive success for Calvin Klein.”

Which was the goal of mom and the clothing company all along, all parties entered into this agreement with their eyes wide open, eyes filled with dollar signs.

  3. Brooke,
Don’t worry over this. No one paid any more attention to Barbara then than they do to any talking heads today. You looked good in the jeans and probably sold more jeans for your innocence.

  4. OK, fine. “star” is a bit extreme. There was a reason you were cast in movies and the male youths of the time bought tickets to the movies.

You may have regrets now, but I am pretty sure that at the time, you and your parents were not arguing with the $$$$$$$ you were bringing in

  5. She did that movie Blue Lagoon shortly after that interview. I assume she was 18 because she was neked through out that movie. She’s still getting neked. I’m not complaining ya understand. She still looks pretty damn good in her fifties.

  6. I am going to retract my previous statements, as far as they go from your earlier years. You are not the one who was naive. You were pushed into the life, and for that I do feel a little bit sorry for you. However, since you continued to make money off your looks with almost 100 appearances, according to IMDB, after you turned 18, not so much

  7. Pretty girl, probably not Rhodes Scholar material, who was exploited since she was 10 (or so) when she did that full-frontal nude in Penthouse or Playboy or whatever smut collection it was. Hope she got some money out of it – assuming her handlers didn’t steal it all. Grievances over the past are useless. Get on with your life – look forward, not back.

  8. Back in the late 90’s when she was married to Agassi they lived less than five miles from me. Brooke Shields sponsored some educational program my wife was involved with. We would run into her a couple of times a year. My observation was she was a beautiful, rich, airhead. And she was tall.

  9. Back in those days Shields also had a domineering, money-greedy, mean-spirited, and backstage mother who helped set the tone for the kid’s over-sexualizing and being a target for profiteers. I recall when the daughter turned 18 years old she stated she was relieved to make her own legal/professional decisions with the assist of her manager. The mother reminds me of the Andrew Cuomo mother who herself was notoriously mean-spirited, grasping, and regarded her predatory family—including now-dead husband—as her personal money-making empire. Years later Brooke Shields experienced a period of post-partum depression and was prescribed antidepressants to help her through this period. The shortie and idiotic Tom Cruise mocked and ridiculed her condition and meds during an interview, then was assaulted with mocking and ridiculing himself as a reward by women with the same condition including psychiatrists who invalidated Cruises’ ignorant and uneducated views. Brooke Shields has endured quite a bit of abuse during her growing days and am glad to see she’s overcome much of it.
