Illinois Republicans sign on to $5 billion tax increase

AT:
The Illinois House passed a $36.5 billion Democratic budget measure with Republican support, opening the door to a tax hike that will cost Illinois taxpayers $5 billion.

The fiscal year began at midnight, July 1 and for the 3rd year in a row, state lawmakers failed to pass a budget. Bond agencies have threatened to reduce the state’s bond rating to junk status if no budget was in place.

But Democratic leader Michael Madigan sent a letter to the bond rating agencies after the House vote asking them to hold off on changing the state’s rating.

GOP Governor Bruce Rauner has indicated he will sign the budget measure if it reaches his desk, even if it includes the $5 billion in tax increases.

  1. Well, the Republican Governor had good intentions, but he caved to the Madigan, Democrat, Chicago, controlled machine. Prisons, Public aid, Medicaid, Gangs, Drugs and Corruption are the ONLY growth industries left in Illinois.
    Sad “state” of affairs.
Thank God I left 5 years ago, my friends in Southern Illinois will pay the price for the rest of their lives.

  2. Talked to my folks in the deep southern end of the state. They’re too old to move but feel that they’ll be fairly secure come what may, even collapse (which I doubt will be allowed to happen). I do miss the hills and silence from down that way, though.

  3. Illinois is hopeless. Cannot recover. Voters would rather die than admit the communist party, and all its corruption, has failed them. The media will never admit they backed the wrong horse. Bankruptcy? They have no choice. Time for Right-to-Work. Public sector unions better brace for very painful pension haircuts.

  4. They will soon need to put a wall around Illinois to keep citizens in.
Try to leave you get shot.
This single act probably reduces everyone in Illinois’ property values at least 10%.

  5. The Bond Rating Agency’s ought to reduce Illinois bonds to junk status anyway stating that the budget passed is unsustainable and that without cuts to pension funds as well as social programs the state will never recover and any money invested is extremely speculative and subject to hisk risk.

  6. Illinois is providing additional incentives for citizens and businesses to leave, discouraging new businesses from coming into the state, and really not solving the fiscal mess they have created for decades. Even the Chicago Sun Times implicitly admitted the plan won’t work.

    Thanks for nothing, Junk Madigan.

  7. Illinois – the Land of Useful Idiots.

“Every Nation (State) has the gov’t it deserves.”

Pres. Trump should make it perfectly clear that NO state will be bailed out by the Federal taxpayers of the United States.

Put CA, IL, NY, MA, MD, OR, WA, and the rest of the thieving maggots on notice.

    izlamo delenda est …
