TWS: Now that Jeff Sessions is Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, you’re going to hear a lot of people dig up old accusations that Sessions is a racist. In fact, CNN did so last night. However, between the nature of the accusations and Sessions’s actual record of desegregating schools and taking on the Klan in Alabama, it strains credulity to believe that he is a racist.
These accusations all center around the bruising judicial nomination process Sessions went through in 1986. Ronald Reagan had tapped Sessions to serve on the federal bench and the Senate judiciary committee ultimately rejected him after they heard testimony that he had supposedly called the ACLU and NAACP “un-American” and “communist-inspired,” as well as made racist remarks. The accusations came from Thomas Figures, a black assistant U.S. attorney who worked for Sessions who said Sessions called him “boy” and had made a joke about how he thought the KKK was “O.K. until [he] found out they smoked pot.” Another prosecutor, J. Gerald Hebert, said Sessions had called a white lawyer “a disgrace to his race” for representing black clients.
There is no concrete reason to doubt Figures or Herbert. Sessions vehemently denied calling Figures “boy,” but he didn’t rebut the substance of some of the claims—though he asserted they were taken out of context. It’s not exactly inaccurate to point out that the NAACP and ACLU were “communist-inspired.” He said he thought it absurd to think he would make a pro-KKK joke considering he was prosecuting the Klan at the time he made the remark. And for what it’s worth, Figures also directed accusations at a another assistant U.S. Attorney who worked with Figures. That assistant U.S. Attorney also said Figures wasn’t telling the truth and defended Sessions’s integrity. Ultimately, the charges were no more than hearsay. MORE
The KKK comment is an extremely common type of ironic joke taken so ridiculously out of context by Figures that it places all of his accusations in the shitter.
Someone says he learned Adolf Hitler kicked his dog. I say, “Oh, damn, and I thought he was such a great guy.” It’s a way of communicating that this latest revelation is nothing on top of all the horrific things already known. Some creep like Figures comes along and claims that I said Hitler was a great guy. It’s dishonest, despicable and a vicious, intentional lie.
A Lie can travel halfway around the world while the Truth is kept busy dodging slings and arrows and bullets from the Left!
It’s the elitist assumption that if you’re a Republican from the Deep South, you are by default a KKK member. Conveniently forgetting the Democrats are the party of Slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow, segregation, etc etc.
The National Enquirer is becoming more respected than CNN.
That’s all you need to know.
CNN long called the Clinton News Network is spewing Hillary’s toxic rage for losing the election they are no more than the protesters being paid by Soros or the university students who cannot cope with life losers. when you want to see how far the left has gone watch CNN and you will find out.
Jeff Sessions is my Senator and he is well respected in Alabama. As stated, no one could corroborate Figures accusations of being called “boy.”
My only concern is that we have a CRAZY Governor (yes, he supposedly a Republican). He is wounded in that there are consideration of impeaching him because of his misbehavior (and yes it involves a woman). He is just a jerk enough to appoint a democrat to replace Sessions.
Pardon my ignorance, but I have to ask. When Trump pulls an R-Senator out of the Senate to fill a position in his administration. Who replaces them?
A temporary replacement by their stat governor? A new special election? Some other process, different in each state?
The Senate majority is barely a majority. Any chance it becomes thinner or flips?
otoh. I would be pleased if Trump pulled an LBJ on Mitch McConnell. You know. Called him up and say, “Mitch, ole boy. I want you to be my ambassador to Turtle Island. And by gawd you’re gonna serve. Or …”
The old offer he can’t refuse.
Thomas Figures was a Ted Kennedy plant sent to derail Sessions nomination to the Federal bench. It was so successful he repeated it the next year with the Robert Bork nomination
And I wondered the same thing. Who will the replacement senator be? Trump needs to think things through, consider balances in Senate, and vetting. You know if any skeletons are hanging around, the loons on the Left will find them, though they can hardly afford looking in their own closets.
Wait. Sessions did what?
If I were a racist, I would not want Sessions to be Attorney General.
To Blink and Southwesterner–I answered your question in my comment but I will do it again. Our idiotic governor, Bentley, (yes he is a Republican but barely) will appoint whoever he wants to appoint. Then in 2018, we get to elect a new senator. Governor Dr. Bentley is mired in a scandal here in Alabama and the legislature is trying (sort of) to impeach him. He is a mean spirited spiteful man and I would not put it past him to appoint a Democrat or himself. It is a mess for sure.
Now if the RINOs will just go along, he is in. Big ‘if’ though.
The left is wailing because Sessions might be a racist.
Can we acknowledge that Holder and Lynch are well-documented racists? As well as partisan hacks that should both lose their law licenses over the illegal crap they’ve done as AGs.
