Iranian IRGC boats tried, failed to seize British oil tanker in Persian Gulf, senior US defense official says

FOX:

Five Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboats tried to seize a British oil tanker in the Persian Gulf Wednesday but backed off after a British warship approached, a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News.

The British warship was said to have been less than 5 miles behind the tanker but soon intercepted the Iranian boats and threatened to open fire. A manned U.S. reconnaissance aircraft was above as well, the official said, adding that Iranian forces left without opening fire.

Navy Captain Bill Urban, spokesman for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), said the military was aware of the reported actions. He added, “Threats to international freedom of navigation require an international solution. The world economy depends on the free flow of commerce, and it is incumbent on all nations to protect and preserve this lynchpin of global prosperity.” read more

  1. Why didn’t they sink the Iranian boat? Rhetorical question.

During WWII, the Germans had gunships disguised as merchant ships. When allied submarines or destroyers came close so they could attack,!the Germans uncovered their guns and preemptively attacked the allies. Very clever.

  4. The Iranian’s send out a few ski boats to intimidate and disrupt world commerce and aren’t sent to the bottom? You can expect to see more of this when you send the signal it will be tolerated.

  5. Gin,

    I respectfully disagree.

If I may mix metaphors…A vessel returning with its tail between its legs is far more detrimental to the Iranians intent and military reputation than sunken Iranian “hero’s”.

    Who really got intimidated here?

There are many vectors of force, including psyops…

  6. In that case they should have boarded the boats, tied up the sailors and made them cry. Broadcast that across the world.
They did it to us during the Obozo admin.

  7. Captain Lazlo would have had that boat boarded, the crew taken prisoner and I would have towed their boat with their entire crew hung by one ankle from my bow. Then I would have scuttled their ship right there and kept their crew as a decoration until the stink annoyed my sailors
