Kktv Brian Bledsoe ~ Delta flight landing in Atlanta this afternoon…The lightning passed through the metal exterior and exited from the right landing gear (clearly visible). No one injured…new pants likely required for most of the passengers via @GoldboxATL on Twitter.

Whoa, I bet that got everyone’s attention.
I’m walking everywhere.
That’s an amazing image.
Had to LOL one day when the Weather Channel ran a little thing about lightning safety, the Roker class dolt saying with a straight face “..your car is safe because the tires are insulators”.
Soooo, the mile or so of air gap was not enough to stop the bolt.. but you think 1/2″ of rubber somehow magically will stop it? LOL 😀
Even at that, the bolt can just jump past the tire to the ground if need be.
Kinda like TWC brilliance on how to prevent sun burn- “..use sunscreen”. Wow!
The car is relatively safe of course because of the metal cage (usually anyway) around you. Same for the aircraft.
I repaired a car hit by lightning once. Went through what used to be the antennae, through the car damaging the fender area, to the ground and blew the pavement up and damaged the car. Luckily, it was parked and empty.
I was on a flight from Seattle to NYC when we were struck by lightening about three minutes after takeoff. It was like a bomb had gone off in the plane. A loud boom & a massive shaking for a few seconds. One of the two times I thought I was going to die.
I was on a flight coming into Seattle and we seemed to take a lightning strike on the tip of the wing, I thought the plane blew up. About 10 seconds later the pilot came on and announced that it was just a “static discharge”. That didn’t change the fact that he had around 135 heart attack victims on his flight.
Once saw a documentary on lightning. Many communities have run their electrical, phone, and TV cable service underground. So as a test, a typical underground wire cable system was setup. Then they induced a lightning strike to the surface above the underground wires. They were about 3 feet underground. The lightning didn’t hit directly above the wires but about 2 feet off center. It burned through the dirt then jumped into the PVC conduit and destroyed the wires. And kept going until it hit some discarded metal about 2 feet further down!
And we have a bunch of LoFo enviro-nazis telling us to live in harmony with Mother Gaia. Fuck that. More like Mommy Dearest Gaia — she’s trying to KILL US!
I was flying into Amsterdam when the plane was hit.
The brightest blinding white light I had ever seen.
I reflexively yelled out “shit”!
A few minutes later it happened again.
That asshole captain didn’t say a damn world about it.
The entire plane was scared shitless!
See, I told you, God doesn’t like to fly on United.
PSST…Delta 😉
