L.A. Times Editor Pleads With Fleeing Californians to Please Stop Bashing State on the Way Out

A Los Angeles Times editor is practically begging people fleeing the no-longer-Golden State to keep their mouths shut about why they’re leaving — as if that would have an impact on the harsh reality.

  2. i find it amazing this editor thinks people leaving California listen to him. he would be better suited to report on the horror stories of the people leaving. kate steinle comes to mind. leave now or leave in a box is the kate steinle story.

  3. The owner is worth $5.5B – although at one point he was tied with Elon for richest guy in L.A. at about $20B, clearly his recent fortune hasn’t matched Elon’s. He could afford the cost of keeping everyone at LA Times if he wanted to.
I worked for Patrick 2003-06. Very friendly but as an A-type personality rarely around. His wife and kids used to come to the office for Halloween costume contests and Thanksgiving potluck, nice family. But he shorted employees on salary, promising a big bonus when the chemo drug got approved, the merger completed, and there was plenty of cash on hand. And when that all came to fruition… he shorted us. And a month later he dropped $42M cash on a G550.
He is (or was) a very friendly guy, some very large donations to hospitals… but it is all money-driven from my experience. And I’m not the only one to say so.

  4. Heaven forbid the LA Times editor writes a scathing editorial AGAINST Clueless Newsome and the criminal democrat-controlled state legislature, the criminal-controlled LA City Council, or any of the other liberal/progressive institutions that have systematically DESTROYED the state and driven so many millions to other states.

  5. The primary reason I left was due to family concerns. However, California went friggin’ nuts, and living in Orange County was becoming more and more untenable. The hypocrisy is palpable – wealthy people in gated communities protecting illegal immigration which affects non-gated (i.e. middle class) communities. Controlled property taxes were nice (although legislators hate this system) – if you lived in your home for a significant number of years. More problematic was the innumerable regulations which made it difficult to building housing for ordinary people. In fact, there are regulations for everything; housing, employment, anything that may conceivably affect the environment, etc. There is also the NIMBY factor – people don’t want necessary infrastructure or new housing in their areas. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

I have said this before, but California is one of the most beautiful states in the country, and it takes a lot to drive people out. But California legislators and those who cover for them – like the Los Angeles Times – are succeeding in this beautifully.

  6. ^^^^^

Workmans Comp rates alone are enough to drive any small business out of California. They handicap your ability to compete. Couple that with the rest of the feel good bull shit, like mandatory retirement accounts, and you can see why there’s a mass exodus. Maybe the Times should chronicle that.

  7. @Wyatt – when I returned from an exploratory visit to Wilmington, NC in June 2020 I took the public bus (which I stopped doing… a bit risky) from LAX to Santa Monica. I knew I was leaving CA but hadn’t cemented my destination yet. My thought was that if I could live anywhere it would be here, where I had spent my entire life apart from college. But I just couldn’t anymore. The laws, the high taxes, the people who voted for Newsom, just too much.

  8. If only the Californians would leave their politics in California. They won’t and they don’t. There are probably some California people who aren’t genuinely messed up in the head politically but I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting any yet. ‘Government ought to’ always seems to be the first thought out of them, on any kind of problem.

  10. VDH wrote great (IMHO0 book on what 2 leftist Presidents named George have done to Cal – Mexifornia. Bushs’s BFF in the MSM either “memory holed’ it or denigrated it. Did nt sell.

    eg
My great grandparents remembered when the Kern Vally was not the sJ VALLEY. I vaguely remember; geography was not “my thing” 50 years ago.

Bush’s OPEN BOARDERS hurt then elite a lot. With good reason the liars Bush got crushed in Cal every election from 1980 to 2004 – except for 1988.

  11. I totally agree. The pendulum is just not going to switch directions that fast. The progressive Nazis, what ever you want to label them, are to entrenched. And they’re not done trying to stop Trump. And even if they don’t stop him his end result will be about a 30% effectiveness due to his own team fighting him tooth and nail. It will be a big step in the right direction but short of what we need. It’s time to hope for the best and prep for the worst. Things will get much worse.

  12. Paul Thornton, so-called journalist – a complete ass and a total ass, to be redundant about it. Gov. Nuisance and other gov’t factotems in the former Golden State need to understand the reasons people are leaving California, if they understand anything at all.

LA Times is nothing but a waste of paper, which could be put to better use as TP.

    Harry has some competition!

  15. Californians: The Times wants you to shut up so they can speak FOR you.
Just as your politicians expect us non-Californians to subsidize their stupidity, we must give them money so they can spend it FOR us.
